For us, the Brothers of Alpha, this isn't just another date on the calendar; it's a profound moment of reflection, celebration, and recommitment to the values that have guided us since our inception.
Thinking back to December 4, 1906, at Cornell University, I'm always in awe of the vision and courage of our seven revered founders. These 'Jewels' – Henry Arthur Callis, Charles Henry Chapman, Eugene Kinckle Jones, George Biddle Kelley, Nathaniel Allison Murray, Robert Harold Ogle, and Vertner Woodson Tandy – laid the groundwork for an organization that would not only provide a haven for African American students but also become a beacon of leadership and service for communities worldwide. Their pioneering spirit, especially during a time of immense racial segregation and challenge, continues to inspire me deeply. The OCR mentioned "ALPHA PHI ALPHA FRATERNITY, INC." and "FOUNDERS YEARS DECEMBER 4, 1906," which perfectly aligns with this historical narrative.
What does "Founders' Day" truly mean to me? It's a day to remember the sacrifices made, the battles fought, and the groundwork laid by those who came before us. It's a day to reaffirm our commitment to scholarship, fellowship, good character, and the uplifting of humanity. When we speak of 'Men of Distinction,' it's a title earned through unwavering dedication to these foundational principles, a legacy that each brother strives to uphold every single day. This distinction isn't just about personal achievement; it's about making a tangible difference in the world, embodying servant leadership in every aspect of our lives. I often think of the powerful sentiment 'MANY BROTHERS. ONE HOUSE.' from our lore, as highlighted in the images, embodying the profound unity and shared purpose that binds us together across generations and geographies.
Beyond the formal ceremonies and grand celebrations, Founders' Day is a deeply personal and introspective experience. It's about reconnecting with brothers, sharing cherished memories, and feeling that undeniable bond that transcends time and distance. Whether it's through a chapter gathering, engaging in community service, or simply taking a quiet moment for reflection, the spirit of Alpha Phi Alpha is palpable. It reminds me why I chose this fraternity and the profound impact it has had on my personal growth, my academic journey, and my commitment to advocating for justice and equality.
It's truly remarkable to consider that 119 years later, the principles established by our visionary founders continue to resonate with such strength and relevance. They shape leaders, innovators, and advocates who are actively making a difference across all sectors of society. From groundbreaking civil rights leaders to trailblazing entrepreneurs, dedicated educators, and visionary artists, the enduring influence of Alpha Phi Alpha is undeniable. As we honor this incredible milestone, let's not just look back at our glorious past, but also forward, carrying the torch of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. with unwavering honor, boundless purpose, and an unyielding commitment to our guiding light: 'First of All, Servants of All, We Shall Transcend All.' Happy Founders' Day to all my beloved brothers, past, present, and future!
