The realities of starting a freelance business

Here’s what they don’t tell you about starting a freelance business ‼️

👉Starting a freelance business is an AMAZING career choice but it’s definitely not easy😅

I’ve noticed some creators talk about all the amazing benefits of freelancing, yet fail to mention the hard realities of the industry- so here are some things I think you should consider before becoming a freelancer! 👀

✨It takes a LOT of time and dedication to create a successful freelance business. You will probably work more than a 9-5, especially in the beginning.

✨Your self discipline will DETERMINE your success. If you procrastinate, don’t stick to your plans, don’t push through moments of low motivation, you won’t do well with freelancing.

✨The taxes and admin side of freelancing can be super confusing and stressful. This is something you might not realize because it’s not something you have to worry about when working a 9-5.

✨Like your self discipline skills, organization skills are also KEY to being successful. You’ll have to manage multiple tasks, people, and clients- this will be incredibly difficult if you’re not organized.

... Read moreIt’s exhilarating to dream about the 'best freelance business ideas,' isn't it? I remember when I first started, my head was buzzing with possibilities – writing, graphic design, social media management, even virtual assistant roles. There are so many avenues to explore, from content creation to web development, and each offers the promise of flexibility and control. But here's the thing I quickly discovered, and wish someone had told me upfront: no matter how brilliant your freelance idea is, its success hinges entirely on your readiness to face the nitty-gritty realities that follow. You might be a fantastic writer, but that alone won't keep your business afloat. You’ll need the same fierce self-discipline and dedication to meet deadlines and find new clients as you would for any other job, often more so. The same goes for a budding graphic designer or social media manager; consistent effort and robust organization are non-negotiable. Then there’s the beast of 'freelance business administration.' This goes far beyond just filing taxes once a year. When I started, I was completely overwhelmed. I quickly learned I needed to set aside a significant portion of every payment for taxes – a lesson I wish I hadn't learned the hard way! Beyond that, administration involves meticulous bookkeeping: tracking every single income and expenditure. There are fantastic tools out there, but you have to be consistent in using them. You're also your own HR department, client relations, and project manager. This means drafting clear contracts, managing client expectations, sending professional invoices, and following up on payments. I’ve found that using a robust task management interface – much like the one you see on a laptop screen when you're deeply focused – is absolutely essential. It helps keep track of multiple projects, ensures nothing falls through the cracks, and gives you a clear overview of your workload. Without strong organizational skills, juggling clients and tasks can quickly lead to burnout. Ultimately, whether you choose to be a freelance consultant, a digital marketer, or a virtual assistant, the core principles remain. The 'time and dedication' mentioned in the original post aren't just buzzwords; they're the fuel that keeps your business running. Your 'self-discipline' is what gets you out of bed on days you'd rather binge-watch TV. And mastering the 'taxes and admin' isn't just about avoiding penalties; it's about understanding your business's financial health. It’s a lot, yes, but knowing these realities beforehand empowers you to build a truly sustainable and successful freelance career.
