1st time gardener !

This is my first time ever gardening! Not too bad for my first time, but I’m needed some tips! I heard peppermint oil eliminates the critters, so I bought some and sprayed them over my plant leaves, the next day they’re now brown and I’m seeing more bugs than before! Any advice!
