✨🍌 Tasting Jamaican Fruits & Veggies 🥭✨
✨ I picked up a few Caribbean staples and here’s my current ranking from favorite to least favorite!
🥇 Mangoes (Mango) 🥭 This one was EASY. Mangoes are sweet, juicy, tropical, and packed with flavor 😮💨 Every bite tastes like sunshine and summer. I could honestly eat these every day and never get tired of them.
🥈 Apple Bananas (Fig Banana) 🍌These surprised me! They're sweeter than regular bananas and have a slight apple-like flavor that makes them super unique. The texture is also creamier than the bananas I'm used to buying at the grocery store. I like that they’re smaller too, so rather easy to eat in one sitting for me compared to a regular banana.
🥉 Red Bananas (Red Fig Banana/Red Dacca) ❤️ Red bananas were definitely interesting. They're sweeter and softer than traditional bananas when ripe with subtle berry-like notes. I enjoyed them, but not quite as much as the apple bananas.
4️⃣ Spiky Chayote (Cho Cho) 🥒 This one wasn't too bad, but it was definitely my least favorite of the bunch. The raw flavor is very mild and reminded me of a cross between a cucumber and squash. I can see it working really well in savory dishes though! ⚠️ BE CAREFUL handling these though! Their prickly thorns can leave you injured if not picked up and handled with care.
✨ One thing I've loved about this Jamaican Food challenge is stepping outside my comfort zone and trying foods I haven’t tried before and have been curious about for some time. Stay tuned because I'll be trying and reviewing rambutan, purple mombin, and red mombin next, and I'm excited to see where they'll land on my rankings!
💬 Let’s chat! Which of these fruits (or the veggie) have you tried before? What's your favorite Caribbean fruit? Which fruit should I taste first: rambutan, purple mombin, or red mombin? 👀 Let me know down below! ⬇️

Trying Jamaican and Caribbean fruits for the first time is truly an adventure for the senses. Mangoes, known for their vibrant sweetness and juicy texture, instantly reminded me of bright summer days—they are no wonder a top Caribbean staple. The apple bananas were a delightful surprise; their sweeter taste combined with an apple-like nuance creates a refreshing twist compared to the standard bananas I usually eat. Their smaller size makes them perfect for a healthy snack on the go. Red bananas, often less familiar to many, reveal a subtler, creamier softness and a hint of berry flavor that sets them apart while still offering comfort through their sweetness. The spiky chayote (or cho cho) may not be as exciting when eaten raw due to its mild flavor somewhat between cucumber and squash, but its potential shines in savory cooking. It can absorb spices and flavors wonderfully, making it a versatile vegetable in Jamaican cuisine. Handling it with care is important because of its sharp thorns, which is a good practical tip for anyone exploring Caribbean produce. What I really appreciate about exploring these fruits and veggies is how it encourages opening up to new tastes and textures beyond my usual diet. Caribbean fruits are not only delicious but offer unique flavors you can't find everywhere. Next on my list are rambutan, purple mombin, and red mombin—fruits that promise even more intriguing profiles and culinary potential. I'm excited to share those experiences and see how they compare to these staples. For anyone interested in trying Caribbean foods, I recommend starting with mangoes and apple bananas—they’re widely loved for good reason. Then, if you’re up for something different, red bananas and chayote will add exciting variety to your palate. Also, exploring how these fruits fit into traditional recipes can deepen your appreciation and enjoyment of Caribbean food culture. Have you tried any of these fruits? Which ones intrigue you the most? It’s a delicious journey well worth taking!
