From my personal experience, especially during flu seasons and recent global health events, adopting a consistent handwashing routine has drastically reduced the frequency of common colds and infections in my household. One key aspect is the technique itself: wetting your hands thoroughly, applying sufficient soap, and scrubbing all parts of your hands including the back, between fingers, and under nails for at least 20 seconds. Singing a short song twice, like 'Happy Birthday,' can help time this duration. Rinsing hands properly under running water and drying them with a clean towel are equally important to remove microbes completely. Using hand sanitizers with at least 60% alcohol is a good alternative if soap and water aren't available; however, they do not eliminate all types of germs and might not be as effective when hands are visibly dirty. Thus, whenever possible, washing with soap and water remains the gold standard. Maintaining this habit not only protects yourself but also those around you by breaking the chain of infection transmission. In workplaces, schools, or public spaces, encouraging proper hand hygiene through reminders and accessible facilities can profoundly impact community health. Incorporating it into daily routines—before meals, after restroom use, or upon returning home—can make handwashing second nature and a powerful shield against many illnesses.
