This one comes up more than almost anything else when I talk to women about their health.

Your labs come back and everything looks fine on paper. Thyroid, normal. Hormones, within range. Iron, okay. And you walk out of that office feeling completely dismissed because you know something is off and nobody can find it.

Here is what conventional lab work often misses.

It measures whether your levels fall within a broad reference range. It does not measure how optimally your body is functioning within that range. It does not look at your gut microbiome, your cortisol pattern throughout the day, your nutrient absorption, or the inflammation that might be quietly affecting everything.

Normal on a lab report and thriving are not the same thing.

Women have been told they are fine for years while dealing with exhaustion, brain fog, weight they cannot shift, anxiety that will not settle, and hair that keeps changing. Fine is a low bar.

You know your body. If something feels off it is worth looking deeper than a standard panel.

Follow me, I am sharing exactly what nobody told me about this 🌸

... Read moreI’ve experienced firsthand how frustrating it can be when your lab results come back 'normal,' but you still feel far from your best. Like many women, I suffered from persistent symptoms such as fatigue, brain fog, and unexplained weight changes despite everything appearing fine on paper. What I learned is that traditional lab panels often miss the nuances of how our bodies actually function day to day. For example, standard blood tests rarely assess the gut microbiome, a crucial factor influencing digestion, immunity, and even mood. An imbalance here can quietly cause widespread symptoms that conventional labs won’t catch. Additionally, spikes and drops in cortisol throughout the day, which impact energy and stress response, aren’t visible unless cortisol is specifically tested throughout multiple points in time. Another overlooked aspect is nutrient absorption. You might have adequate nutrient levels in blood tests but still not absorb them properly due to gut inflammation or other issues. Chronic low-grade inflammation also plays a hidden role, affecting everything from metabolic health to mental clarity. Through my journey, I realized how important it is to advocate for further testing beyond the broad reference ranges and to listen to your body’s signals. Functional medicine practitioners often use more comprehensive testing that reveals these subtleties, helping to tailor targeted interventions to restore balance. If you feel dismissed by your healthcare providers when your labs look 'normal,' remember you are your best health advocate. Digging deeper, exploring lifestyle factors, diet, stress management, and personalized testing can unlock answers. Feeling truly well means more than just falling within generic lab ranges—it’s about thriving in your daily life.
