I thought my gut was just about digestion. Bloating, regularity, that kind of thing. I had no idea it was running my mood at the same time.
Here is what actually happens.
Your gut produces approximately 95% of your serotonin. Not your brain. Your gut. Serotonin is the neurotransmitter most associated with feeling calm, stable, and okay. When your gut is out of balance your serotonin production suffers and your brain feels it almost immediately.
The anxiety that seems to come from nowhere. The mood that is unpredictable in ways that feel bigger than the situation. The low level hum of feeling off that you cannot quite explain. A significant amount of that is your gut talking.
On top of that your gut and your brain are in direct two way communication through what is called the gut-brain axis. When your gut is inflamed or imbalanced it sends stress signals to your brain. Your brain responds by activating your stress response. Your cortisol goes up. And suddenly everything feels harder than it needs to.
Supporting my gut health changed my mood in a way that nothing I tried for my mood directly ever did. Because I was finally addressing where the mood was actually coming from.
Comment BRAIN and I'll share what I do every day to support my gut and my mood 🌸
When I first learned that my gut produces most of the body's serotonin, it completely changed how I viewed my emotional health. Before, I only saw my gut as responsible for digestion and occasional discomforts like bloating or irregularity. But recognizing that an unhealthy gut can significantly impact mood and increase anxiety helped me take a new approach to well-being. One practical change I made was focusing on gut-friendly habits such as eating more fiber-rich foods, fermented products, and reducing processed sugars and inflammatory foods. These adjustments helped reduce gut inflammation, which, according to the gut-brain axis theory, sends fewer stress signals to the brain, easing my overall anxiety levels. I also embraced mindfulness and stress-reduction techniques because stress plays a huge role in gut health. Practices like meditation and gentle exercise further supported my gut-brain balance. Over time, I noticed my unpredictable mood swings stabilized, and that low-level feeling of being 'off' significantly diminished. For anyone struggling with unexplained mood fluctuations or anxiety, considering gut health as a root cause can be empowering. Supporting your gut might not only improve digestion but can provide a more profound sense of calmness and emotional stability. This holistic approach tackles the source rather than symptoms, making it a valuable addition to traditional mood management strategies.
