Because I thought I was just overwhelmed. Just stressed. Just someone who needed to get it together.
The snapping over things that did not deserve it. The crying at a commercial or a song or literally nothing at all. The feeling of being emotionally somewhere slightly outside of myself, reactive in ways I did not recognize and could not fully control.
I kept apologizing. To my girls. To myself. Wondering why I could not just be more even, more patient, more regulated.
Nobody told me that emotional dysregulation like that has a physiological root. That when your cortisol is chronically elevated and your gut-brain axis is out of balance your brain literally does not have what it needs to regulate your emotional responses properly.
It was not a personality problem. It was a hormone and gut health problem that was showing up in the most personal and painful way possible.
When I started addressing the root the emotional volatility started softening. Not immediately. But consistently and noticeably in a way that felt like coming back to myself.
Follow me, I am sharing everything I learned that changed this for me 🌸
From my personal journey, I realized that emotional ups and downs often blamed on stress or personality flaws could actually stem from deeper physiological factors. Elevated cortisol levels, a hormone released during prolonged stress, disrupt the body’s ability to regulate emotions effectively. This hormonal imbalance, combined with an unhealthy gut-brain axis, can lead to heightened emotional sensitivity and reactions that feel out of control. Addressing these issues requires a holistic approach—improving gut health through diet, incorporating stress management techniques like mindfulness or gentle exercise, and sometimes consulting healthcare providers for hormonal assessment. For me, small changes such as increasing probiotic-rich foods and prioritizing sleep quality significantly helped reduce emotional volatility. It’s important to acknowledge that emotional regulation is not purely a mental challenge but closely linked to physical health. Sharing experiences with others who face similar struggles and exploring natural approaches to balance hormones and gut health can empower you to regain control and foster resilience in daily life.
