Just dinking around with Eb today while waiting on a meet and greet with a boarding dog. I’ve been having a tough time weaning her off of a toy for reward as she just doesn’t bring the same engagement for food. Today, we left the toy at home and I was so pleased with her ethic today. Our work is paying off!
We’re FINALLYYYYYYYY getting that left heel down and not crowding at my knee and cutting me off, or stomping on my toes in motion. I made a massive mistake teaching her a heel on the right for the last couple years. But better late than never! Now, time to stop that bouncing upward on two feet where possible and reward an actual high step gait. We will also get that down in motion more snappy, but today’s focus wasn’t on that.

Training a Doberman to heel properly, especially focusing on the left side, requires patience and consistent methodology. Many trainers make the mistake of teaching the heel predominantly on one side, such as the right, which can lead to imbalances and behavioral issues during movement. It’s important to correct these habits by redirecting focus to the weaker side without causing stress or confusion in the dog. One useful approach is to phase out toys and shift reward emphasis towards engagement cues like treats or verbal praise. Although some dogs display higher motivation towards toys, finding alternate rewards can increase their focus and responsiveness in training sessions. A high-step gait in Dobermans is desirable as it reflects correct breed movement and improves overall control during obedience exercises. This gait is characterized by precise paw lift and controlled strides, which can be encouraged through rewarding proper posture and minimizing unwanted jumping or bouncing behaviors. Consistent practice during various activities, such as meet and greets with other dogs or handlers, helps maintain discipline and responsiveness in real-world settings. Training that emphasizes balance between rewarding and refining behaviors solidifies commands while maintaining the dog’s enthusiasm. Incorporating breed-specific hashtags such as #Doberman, #EuroDoberman, and #WorkingDoberman also highlights the importance of adhering to breed standards in training routines, especially for those interested in show or working dog careers. Combining obedience basics (OB), German Shepherd Sport dog training (IGP), and breed preservation principles ensures a comprehensive, well-rounded training program. By focusing on engagement rather than solely toys, gradually improving left heel positioning, and refining gait consistency, Doberman enthusiasts can significantly enhance their dog's obedience and gait quality that aligns with breed standards.
