What our conversations looked like while our baby was fighting for his life 🙏🏼
Going back through our texts from that time was so hard. In the beginning, my boyfriend was traveling back and forth between Florida and Ohio, trying to be there for me and our baby. Then, he was offered a new job - higher pay, fully remote. They say babies bring blessings, and that couldn’t be more true for us. Every morning, he’d call the NICU for updates before I even opened my eyes. Every night, he’d call again before bed. I truly don’t know how I would have made it through without him. He was my rock - the one who pulled me out of bed on the days I physically couldn’t do it.
During the intense journey of having a baby in the NICU, every small update feels monumental. Our texts reveal so much more than just words—they capture the raw emotions, hope, and strength needed to keep going. For instance, early messages show the excitement mixed with the sudden challenges, like when our son arrived unexpectedly on 10/29 and was called a "little troublemaker." This blend of humor and love helped us maintain resilience. The NICU period involves high anxiety, uncertainty, and lots of waiting for medical updates. I recall how my partner called the NICU multiple times daily, always checking on our little one's condition, showing how remote work flexibility made this possible. This constant communication, not only with the hospital staff but also between us, was a vital lifeline. These updates included milestones like our baby being taken off breathing tubes, showing no infections, and gaining weight—moments that brought immense relief and joy. One touching moment is when our baby pointed to an angel wing tattoo, symbolizing connection to a lost family member. This reminded us how intertwined grief and hope can be during such times. Choosing a meaningful middle name like Sebastian reinforced our hope and faith in his strength. Feeding schedules, medical procedures, and therapists visiting our baby were all carefully documented in texts, which helped us feel involved and informed in our baby's care. Nurse Jean’s reports about his comfort and progress brought reassurance and strengthened our bond. Supporting a preemie in the NICU demands incredible emotional endurance. Sharing these moments through texts helped us stay connected, uplift each other, and cherish every small victory. For any parent facing NICU challenges, remember that every call, message, and moment of touch time adds to the healing journey of both baby and family. The NICU may be daunting, but the love and dedication of parents, partners, and staff create a community of hope and strength that carries babies through.
