... Read moreOkay, so you've seen my quick post about devouring those amazing tacos de nopal, but let me tell you, there's so much more to these incredible cactus tacos! If you're new to nopales, don't be intimidated by the idea of eating cactus – it's absolutely delicious and surprisingly easy to prepare. First off, let's talk about the star: nopales. These prickly pear cactus pads are a staple in Mexican cuisine, known for their slightly tart, tangy flavor and tender, slightly slimy texture (which disappears once cooked properly!). They're also packed with fiber and vitamins, making these tacos not just tasty but healthy too! When I grab mine from the Mexican market, I usually look for fresh, firm pads with vibrant green color. Preparing nopales is key. After carefully removing any remaining thorns (some markets sell them pre-cleaned!), I usually dice them into small squares. Then, I boil them in lightly salted water for about 10-15 minutes until they're tender. You'll notice a bit of a gooey texture during cooking, but don't worry, it drains away! Once boiled, I rinse them well and they're ready for action. Sometimes, I even grill them whole first for a smoky flavor before dicing – so good! Now, for the filling! My simple recipe in the original post is just the beginning. I sauté my cooked nopales with diced red onion, Roma tomatoes, and a finely chopped serrano pepper for a little kick. Tomatillos add that essential tangy brightness, and fresh cilantro finishes it off. To truly elevate your tacos de nopal, don't forget the toppings! A generous scoop of fresh avocado adds a creamy counterpoint, and a sprinkle of finely diced red onion provides a lovely crunch. The green salsa I often make with tomatillos and serranos is a game-changer – it perfectly complements the nopales. You can also add a crumble of cotija cheese or a drizzle of Mexican crema if you like. And what's a taco feast without a refreshing drink? While the picture might show a delightful Coco Horchata, a classic agua fresca or even a simple limeade would be fantastic alongside. If you're feeling adventurous, these nopales are super versatile. You can easily add grilled steak (tacos de bistec con nopales) or diced potatoes (tacos con papas y nopales) to the mix for a heartier meal. They're also incredible in scrambled eggs or even a simple salad. So next time you're at the market, grab some nopales and get cooking – you won't regret diving into the world of authentic Mexican cactus tacos!
