Part 2- How to Keep Your Bestie Close🫶🏾

This is part 2 of my 5 part series on friendship. The series is called Unfiltered Friendship: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly!

This second part is all about Long Distance Friendships 😢 As someone who has recently just gone through this in the past few years! I’m sharing my practical tips and personal stories to help you maintain and even strengthen your long-distance friendships.

1️⃣ Acknowledge the Shift

First, let’s be real about it—long-distance friendships are different. You’re not going to have the same spontaneous hangouts or regular coffee dates, and that’s okay. What matters is acknowledging the change and committing to staying connected in new ways.

2️⃣ Schedule Quality Time

In a busy world, “We’ll talk soon” or “Il call you back” often turns into “Oops, it’s been days, weeks, months!” So, treat your long-distance friend like a priority.

Set up regular calls or video chats—something you can look forward to.

3️⃣ Celebrate all the things

The big things, the little things and everything in between! Acknowledge birthdays, anniversaries, big and small milestones. Send a random “I’m proud of you” text, a funny meme that reminds you of them, or even a care package.

4️⃣ Share Your Lives

Just because you’re apart doesn’t mean you can’t stay involved in each other’s daily routines.

Send pictures of what you’re up to almost daily, voice notes, links, memes etc. It’s like saying, “Hey, I wish you were here,” without actually saying it.

5️⃣ Plan In-Person Visits

Whenever possible, plan in-person visits. Nothing beats the joy of reuniting with your bestie! Start saving for a trip or look for opportunities to meet halfway. Even if it’s once a year, those memories will be worth every penny.

6️⃣ Be Patient and Understanding

Life gets busy, and sometimes, weeks or months might go by without much communication. That’s okay. True friendships can pick up right where they left off.

Long-distance friendships aren’t always easy, but with the right ones they’re so worth it. With a little effort and a lot of love, you can keep your bond strong, no matter the distance💚

... Read moreMaintaining strong long-distance friendships in our digital age is more achievable than ever, but it definitely takes intention and creativity! Beyond just calls and texts, I've found that integrating specific digital tools and thoughtful gestures can truly make a difference in keeping that 'cute' connection alive. For instance, when it comes to scheduling quality time, synchronous activities like watching a movie together using browser extensions (like Teleparty) or playing online games can feel much more engaging than just a video call. It creates a shared experience, almost like you're in the same room, and gives you something fun to talk about afterwards. To really share your lives and make your digital friendship feel more intimate, consider asynchronous communication methods that go beyond quick updates. I love using shared digital journals or photo albums where we can both contribute memories, thoughts, or funny screenshots throughout the week. This builds a continuous narrative of your friendship, even when you can't chat live. Sending personalized voice notes instead of just texts can also add a layer of warmth and personality, making your long-distance bestie feel truly heard and remembered. It's about finding those little ways to be present in each other's day, even when you're physically apart. Making your long-distance friendship feel 'cute' and special often comes down to unexpected gestures. Think about sending a surprise e-gift card for their favorite coffee shop on a random Tuesday, or organizing a virtual 'dinner date' where you both cook the same recipe and enjoy it over video chat. For birthdays or milestones, a digital scrapbook filled with old photos and shared memories can be incredibly touching. These small, thoughtful efforts show that you're not just staying in touch, but actively investing in the joy and unique dynamic of your bond, proving that distance doesn't diminish affection. One thing I've learned about digital friendship is the importance of understanding and patience. Life happens, and sometimes communication might dip. It's easy to overthink things when you're not seeing each other regularly. However, true long-distance friendships understand that busy periods are normal. What matters is the consistent effort over time, and the reassurance that you're always there for each other, even if it's just a quick meme exchange. Remember, those planned in-person visits, even if rare, become incredibly precious and recharge the emotional bank, making all the digital effort worthwhile. It's all about finding what works for your unique friendship and making a conscious choice to nurture it.
