Week 1 of Locs 🍋

2025/6/17 Edited to

... Read moreMy First Week with Starter Locs: What I’ve Learned So Far Embarking on a loc journey is truly an adventure, and I'm thrilled to share my experience from week one! The initial stage is all about patience and understanding what your hair needs. From the moment I got them installed, I've noticed a significant change, and I'm already learning so much about how my hair behaves in this new form. For this first week, my daily routine has been incredibly simple, almost surprisingly so. Every morning, after taking them out of my two-strand twists, I don't do much except gently rake my fingers through them to separate any locs that might have tried to merge overnight. Then, I give them a light mist with a little rose water – that's it! I've found that less manipulation is definitely more at this stage. It’s comforting to know that I don’t need a complicated regimen just yet. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned this week is about volume and expectations for very short starter locs. While my locs aren't as "boneless" as some can be right after installation, I'm used to my natural hair having more volume. Right now, with a middle part, they can look a little too flat for me. This is a common experience for those with shorter or smaller locs. It’s important to remember that this is just the very beginning of the loc stages timeline. I'm actually really looking forward to them getting like the frizz and becoming bigger than they are right now. That frizz is a sign that they're starting to bud and truly lock, which is exactly what I want! Beyond just my daily routine, maintaining starter locs involves a few other key considerations to ensure they start strong and healthy. For anyone wondering how to maintain starter locs, especially in these early weeks: Protect Your Locs at Night: Always sleep with a satin bonnet or scarf. This is crucial to prevent frizz from friction and keep your locs neat, minimizing breakage and tangling. Washing with Care: While I haven't done a full wash yet, when the time comes (typically after 2-4 weeks, or when advised by your loctician), it's essential to be gentle. Use a clarifying shampoo, dilute it, and focus on your scalp. Avoid vigorous scrubbing that could unravel your delicate starter locs. I plan to use a stocking cap or wig cap over my locs during the wash if they are very short, to keep them from unraveling. Moisture is Key, But Don't Overdo It: My rose water mist is perfect for light hydration. You can also use a light, non-comedogenic oil (like jojoba or grapeseed) sparingly on your scalp if it feels dry. Avoid heavy butters or creams that can cause buildup within the locs. Limit Manipulation: As I mentioned, I don't do much, and that's intentional. Frequent retwists or styling can cause thinning at the roots. Let your locs settle and mature. You might not see significant budding in your first month but embrace the journey. Embrace the Frizz: Don’t fight the frizz! It’s a natural part of the locking process. It means your hair strands are intertwining and forming those beautiful locs. My excitement for more frizz is genuine because I know it means progress. This initial phase, especially for small locs natural hair, is about observing and letting your hair do its thing. While I'm only at one week, it feels like a significant milestone, and I can't wait to see how they evolve, especially as I head towards the two-month mark and beyond. Every day is a step closer to the mature locs I envision.
