The use of materials like charcoal and conte, as mentioned in the student's practice, is common in life drawing for achieving varied textures and contrasts. Charcoal allows for rich, dramatic shadows and smooth blending, while conte pencils provide fine detail and precision. Struggling with proportions is a typical challenge for beginners in life drawing, as capturing the accurate relationship of body parts requires practice and patience. Improvement over a semester demonstrates dedication and the importance of continual practice.
