One of my favorite experiences was walking through the Plaza Mayor, a grand Baroque square that buzzes with life both day and night. It’s a perfect spot to enjoy a coffee or tapas while admiring the beautiful facades. Salamanca is also home to one of the oldest universities in Europe, founded in 1218. The university buildings themselves are architectural masterpieces, and taking a guided tour allows you to appreciate the blend of Gothic and Renaissance styles. Don’t miss the famous "frog" carved above the university entrance—a local symbol said to bring good luck if spotted. For art lovers, the city’s cathedrals showcase awe-inspiring artistry, from Gothic to Baroque elements. Climbing the cathedral towers rewards visitors with panoramic views of the historic cityscape—the perfect photo opportunity. Furthermore, Salamanca’s lively streets are filled with charming cafĆ©s and restaurants where you can savor authentic Spanish cuisine, including the region’s specialty, hornazo, a savory meat pie. Considering my own trip, I found that exploring Salamanca on foot allowed me to absorb its unique atmosphere and discover hidden gems, such as quaint bookstores and artisan shops. Whether you’re into history, architecture, or simply soaking up the local vibe, Salamanca is a destination that leaves a lasting impression.
