It’s certainly not for the faint of heart, but getting that super-fast internet directly to my home was a huge motivator. I wanted to share a bit more about my journey, especially since I decided to get creative and utilize an existing drain cleanout.
First things first, planning is crucial when you're thinking about any underground work. Before I even thought about a shovel, I called 811 to have all utility lines marked. You absolutely do not want to hit a gas line or an electrical conduit! Once the area was marked, I planned my trench route. My goal was to get the fiber from the street to my house with minimal disruption, and that's where the drain cleanout idea sparked. I noticed my existing light blue PVC drain cleanout pipe was in a convenient spot, and with a bit of careful inspection, I realized I could potentially use it as a pathway for my new fiber optic conduit.
The next step was selecting the right conduit. Based on some research, I opted for bright orange conduits, similar to what you might see professionals use, to house the delicate fiber optic cables. The orange color makes it highly visible, which is a great safety feature if anyone ever digs in that area again.
Now, for the trenching itself. My backyard turned into a bit of a muddy trench zone! The ground was quite wet, and dealing with all that dark brown soil and small rocks was a workout. I aimed for a depth of about 18-24 inches to ensure the fiber optic cables were protected from surface activities and future landscaping. Digging by hand was slow going, but it gave me precise control, especially when approaching the existing pipes.
The ingenious part (if I do say so myself!) was carefully excavating around the PVC drain cleanout pipe. With some patience, I was able to expose it and strategically connect my new orange conduits. This involved some careful cutting and sealing to ensure everything remained watertight and secure. I made sure to leave enough slack at both ends for future connections, and then sealed the ends of the conduit to prevent water and pests from getting in.
Finally, backfilling the trench. This is where the "muddy" part really came into play, as seen in some of my project photos. I carefully replaced the dark brown soil, compacting it gently to avoid creating future sinkholes. It took a few days for the ground to settle, and I’ll probably need to add a bit more soil and reseed the grass in those areas.
Overall, transforming my backyard into an underground fiber optic conduit installation trench was a big undertaking. But the satisfaction of having a robust, high-speed internet connection, achieved through a bit of DIY ingenuity with that drain cleanout, is immense.
