The Sunk Cost

... Read moreI've often found myself stuck in the trap of the sunk cost fallacy without realizing it. For example, recently I bought a new phone and when I checked the resale price, it was going for half of what I paid. Initially, I felt tempted to hold onto it longer or worried I’d lose money by selling it now. This comic perfectly illustrates that feeling—where the idea of 'getting half my money back' seems like a win, but in fact it’s a sunk cost. The sunk cost fallacy happens when people continue investing time, money, or effort into something simply because they’ve already spent resources on it, even if the rational choice would be to cut losses. It's a common bias that can affect various decisions—from technology purchases to relationships and careers. What helped me personally was shifting focus from what I’ve lost to what I stand to gain by making better decisions now. Selling that phone at half price wasn’t about recovering the entire cost but about making a pragmatic choice based on current value and needs. Holding onto an item just because I paid a certain amount before often leads to missed opportunities or ongoing dissatisfaction. Marko’s comic highlights this concept in a relatable way, showing how we sometimes justify decisions on past costs rather than present realities. If you’ve faced similar moments—whether with gadgets, subscriptions, or even event tickets—reflecting on the sunk cost fallacy can empower smarter, less emotionally-driven choices. This awareness has improved my financial decisions and reduced regret, and sharing these insights through humor makes the lesson memorable and engaging.

The sunk cost fallacy is the most expensive thing most people will ever carry. It works like this: the longer you've invested in something wrong the harder it feels to leave it. Not because staying makes sense. But because leaving feels like admitting that the years already spent were wasted.
