Run-throughs

Run-throughs are an essential part of any music rehearsal process, serving as a complete run of a piece or segments without stopping, allowing musicians to experience the flow and structure of the music as a whole. From my experience as a music educator and conductor, run-throughs play a vital role in identifying areas that need refinement, improving timing, and building ensemble cohesion. One key tip I’ve learned is to balance between too many and too few run-throughs. Too many can exhaust players and reduce focus, while too few might hinder the ensemble's ability to internalize the music's form and emotional arcs. Setting clear objectives before each run-through, such as focusing on expression, dynamics, or technical accuracy, helps keep the rehearsal purposeful. Additionally, creating a supportive environment where mistakes during run-throughs are seen as learning opportunities encourages musicians to take risks and stay engaged. It’s also beneficial to simulate performance conditions during run-throughs, including proper stage presence and audience interaction, which helps prepare the ensemble mentally and emotionally. For conductors, efficient communication is crucial during run-throughs. Using clear gestures, well-timed cues, and concise feedback helps maintain momentum. Furthermore, incorporating periodic run-throughs early in the rehearsal process and gradually moving towards uninterrupted runs closer to performance day ensures steady progress. Incorporating technology, like recording run-throughs, provides valuable playback opportunities that can enhance self-assessment for both conductors and musicians. Overall, well-structured run-throughs are fundamental for mastering repertoire and elevating ensemble performance.
