Lived experience

6/21 Edited to

... Read moreFrom my experience as a music educator and conductor, I have come to deeply appreciate the value of lived experience in shaping how we understand music and convey its nuances to students. Living through a variety of musical environments—from classroom settings to concert halls—provides insights that textbooks alone cannot offer. One important lesson I have learned is that every student brings their own unique lived experience to a music education setting. This diversity enriches the learning environment and encourages adaptability in teaching methods. For example, students influenced by different cultural backgrounds or exposure to various musical styles require personalized approaches that resonate with their personal histories. In conducting, lived experience informs not just technical skill but also leadership style. Understanding the emotional and psychological context of ensemble members helps build trust and cohesion, essential for a successful performance. Experiencing firsthand the challenges and triumphs of rehearsals allows a conductor to anticipate and address potential issues more effectively. The hashtag #thebear in the article reminded me of the emotional storytelling power that a conductor must harness. Bringing narratives to life through music requires an empathetic connection to the piece and the performers, something that only comes with genuine lived encounters. In summary, embracing lived experience as a cornerstone of music education and conducting cultivates an environment where creativity and personal growth flourish. Sharing these reflections with fellow educators and conductors encourages us to continually draw from our own journeys to better inspire those we teach and lead.

Some people don’t understand why those of us in recovery choose to share our stories so openly. The truth is, if I got into recovery and kept my mouth shut, no one would know that change is possible. Silence helps no one. Sharing our stories isn’t about attention or glorifying the past it’s about
