Over-Explaining Is a Survival Response
Over-explaining isn’t because you talk too much.
It’s because at some point, being simple wasn’t safe.
You learned to justify every feeling.
Every boundary.
Every decision.
Not to communicate — but to protect yourself.
The hard truth?
Over-explaining doesn’t make toxic people understand you.
It teaches them you’ll work harder than they will.
And that’s where the imbalance starts.

Over-explaining often stems from a deep-seated need to protect ourselves in situations where vulnerability felt unsafe. In my experience, especially when dealing with toxic relationships, over-explaining becomes a defense mechanism rather than just excessive talking. I found that when I tried to justify every feeling, boundary, or decision, it was less about communication and more about shielding myself from judgment or blame. One key insight I learned is that over-explaining doesn’t necessarily lead others, particularly toxic individuals, to understand or respect your perspective. Instead, it can inadvertently signal that you’re willing to put in more effort to maintain the relationship, which can deepen the imbalance. This realization helped me to set firmer boundaries and focus on self-respect. By recognizing that I didn’t have to justify every boundary or feeling, I started to reclaim my voice and reserve explanations for when they truly mattered. It’s important to remember that simplicity in communication can be a form of strength, not weakness, especially when interacting with toxic people who may exploit over-explanation. If you find yourself frequently over-explaining, try pausing before justifying your feelings or decisions. Ask yourself whether the explanation is protecting you or enabling others’ unhealthy behaviors. Over time, this practice can help restore balance in your relationships and promote healthier interactions based on mutual respect rather than unequal effort.
I wish I had found you a long time ago!! Thank you for these posts. This is amazing! This was me.
