... Read moreOkay, girlies, after my 'This or That' challenge, I realized just how much love there is for unique hairstyles! You all asked about the 'small dragon braids into a messy bun,' and honestly, it's quickly become one of my absolute favorites. Let me spill the tea on why and how I achieve this look, plus a few tips I've picked up along the way.
The beauty of the dragon braid messy bun is its versatility. It looks intricate, but it’s surprisingly simple once you get the hang of it. I usually start by parting my hair down the middle, creating two sections. For each side, I take a small section of hair near my temple and begin a regular three-strand braid, but here's the trick: with each cross-over, I add a small section of hair from underneath the braid, pulling it tight to create that 'dragon scale' effect. This is key for the defined, slightly raised look. I continue this down the side of my head, usually aiming for just past my ear, before securing it with a small elastic. Then, I gently tug at the loops of the braid to give it a fuller, more relaxed appearance – this makes it look less 'schoolgirl' and more 'effortlessly chic.'
Once both dragon braids are done, I gather all my hair, including the braids, into a high ponytail. This is where the 'messy bun' comes in. Instead of a perfect bun, I twist the ponytail loosely and wrap it around the base, securing it with another elastic and a few bobby pins. I love pulling out a few face-framing pieces and gently loosening the bun itself for that perfectly undone vibe. Sometimes, I even play around with accessories, like adding a cute pink ribbon to the base of the bun, just like in some of my inspiration pics. It adds such a sweet touch!
Now, compared to the 'double flip-through ponytail,' which is super quick and elegant, the dragon braid bun takes a little more time, but the payoff is totally worth it. The flip-through is fantastic for those mornings when you have literally two minutes, giving you a polished look instantly. But for days I want something a bit more playful and textured, the dragon braid wins every time.
My top tips for the dragon braid messy bun? First, make sure your hair has a little grip – day-old hair is often better than freshly washed. If your hair is too slick, a texturizing spray can work wonders. Second, don't be afraid to experiment with how tight or loose you make the braids and the bun. Sometimes a tighter braid at the top with a super loose bun gives a cool contrast. And always, always have a good stock of small clear elastics and bobby pins! They’re lifesavers.
I’ve found this style perfect for everything from a casual coffee run to a weekend brunch. It keeps my hair off my face, looks put-together, and feels a bit more special than a regular bun. Plus, it holds up really well, which is a big win for my active days!
So, while my 'This or That' post was about choosing, I hope this deep dive helps you feel confident to try the small dragon braids into a messy bun yourself! Have you tried this style before?
