Listen, learn and understand
Hey everyone! I wanted to share something that has genuinely transformed how I connect with people – and it’s all about active listening. We often think we’re listening, but are we truly hearing what others are saying? I used to just wait for my turn to speak, missing so much of the conversation. That's why I've become such a huge believer in this 5-step active listening checklist, and I really hope sharing my experience helps you too! 1. Give Your Full Attention (Really!) This seems obvious, right? But it's harder than it sounds in our always-on world. For me, "full attention" means putting away my phone (yes, even silencing it!), closing unnecessary tabs on my laptop, and making eye contact. I used to find myself mentally drafting my grocery list or thinking about a work email mid-conversation. Now, I try to center myself, focus on the speaker's words, tone, and body language. If my mind wanders, I gently bring it back. It makes a massive difference in how present I feel and how much I absorb. 2. Resist the Urge to Interrupt Oh, this one is tough for me! I get so excited to share my thoughts or relate to someone's story that I often used to cut them off. I've learned to literally bite my tongue sometimes, waiting for a natural pause. It shows respect and allows the speaker to fully articulate their point without feeling rushed or unheard. You'd be surprised how much richer the conversation becomes when everyone gets to finish their thoughts. 3. Practice Paraphrasing (It's a Game Changer!) This is probably the most powerful technique I've adopted. After someone speaks, I'll often say something like, "So, if I'm hearing you correctly, you're feeling X because of Y?" or "Just to make sure I understand, you're saying [rephrase their point in your own words]?" It's not about repeating them word-for-word, but confirming your understanding. This not only clarifies things for me but also makes the speaker feel incredibly validated and understood. It’s like a little verbal hug. 4. Ask Clarifying Questions Don't be afraid to ask for more information! Instead of making assumptions, I've started asking open-ended questions like, "Could you tell me more about that?" or "What specifically happened that made you feel that way?" These questions encourage the speaker to elaborate and provide deeper context, preventing misunderstandings and showing genuine curiosity. It helps peel back the layers of a story. 5. Provide Thoughtful Feedback Feedback isn't just about giving advice; it's also about showing you're engaged. Simple nods, making eye contact, or verbal affirmations like "I see," "That makes sense," or "Mm-hmm" are powerful. It’s about being an active participant in the conversation, not just a passive receiver. Sometimes, it's just about reflecting their emotions, like, "That sounds really frustrating." And you know what? This isn't just for face-to-face chats. Even on platforms like TikTok, where communication can be so quick, these principles apply. When I'm watching a video or reading comments, I try to actively understand the creator's message or the commenter's perspective before forming my own opinion or reply. It helps me create more thoughtful content and engage more genuinely with my audience. Learning to listen actively has truly improved my relationships, my understanding of the world, and even my own self-awareness. It takes practice, but it's incredibly rewarding. Give these steps a try and let me know how they work for you!
