So on my birthday I got an upset stomach and started burping, nbd, I had 1.5 hard ciders, a few gf cupcakes and a small gf pizza with jalapeños. Which isn’t too crazy for me to eat.
I’m 23, very healthy, I go to the gym 4 times a week, I like to eat smoothies and salads and I eat a gluten free diet.
The problem is the burping never went away. And it’s constant, sometimes it will last for hours and then I’ll get a little break and then it starts again. Like every other word when I speak is a burp. I also have a little bit of reflux and chest tightness. And currently stomach pain under my ribs.
I went to redimed and they said it was GERD and gave me a PPI. It didn’t work, so I went to my normal doctor and she said to double the PPI and gave me a muscle relaxer for esophagus spasms.
That also hasn’t worked…
So now I’m waiting to get an endoscopy scheduled. Which can take weeks
I don’t know what to do… I can’t sleep, eating is hard, and I have two small children that I’m trying to take care of while I feel horrible.
Has this happened to anyone else?

Read moreDealing with ongoing burping and digestive discomfort can be incredibly stressful, especially when initial treatments like PPIs (proton pump inhibitors) and muscle relaxers don’t provide relief. From the OCR content, it’s clear that staying hydrated with alkaline water (pH 9.5+) is recommended by some as a supportive measure, as proper hydration may help soothe irritation and aid digestion. It’s also important to consider that persistent burping and chest tightness might indicate underlying esophageal issues beyond simple GERD, such as spasms or hiatal hernia.
While waiting for your endoscopy—a vital diagnostic tool to visually assess the esophagus and stomach lining—there are ways to help ease symptoms. Eating smaller, more frequent meals, avoiding trigger foods like spicy, fatty, or carbonated drinks, and elevating the head of your bed can minimize reflux and reduce burping frequency. Also, practicing stress management techniques, like meditation or gentle yoga, may help reduce esophageal spasms and discomfort.
If over-the-counter medications haven’t been effective, consult your healthcare provider about possible alternative diagnoses or therapies. Sometimes, adding digestive enzymes, probiotics, or making dietary adjustments can provide relief. It’s important to note that even healthy lifestyles and gluten-free diets don’t always prevent digestive issues; individual sensitivities and infections can play roles.
Taking care of yourself while managing symptoms and caring for young children is challenging. Try to enlist support from family or friends to help with daily tasks to allow more rest and recovery time. Keep a symptom diary to track what worsens or improves your condition, which can be valuable information for your doctors.
Remember, chronic burping and reflux should never be ignored, especially when accompanied by chest tightness and stomach pain. These symptoms warrant thorough evaluation to rule out serious conditions. Your experience is valid, and many others share similar struggles. Stay proactive, keep communicating with your healthcare team, and utilize recommended supportive practices like alkaline hydration to soothe your digestive system during this difficult time.
