It’s amazing how a few simple ingredients—pasta sheets, ground meat, tomato sauce, cheese—can come together to create such a rich and delicious dish. What I’ve learned is that the secret really lies in layering; each layer of meat sauce, béchamel, and cheese adds depth and creaminess that melts perfectly when baked. For anyone new to making lasagne, I recommend starting with a homemade tomato sauce if time permits. Sauté onions and garlic, add ground beef or sausage, then simmer with canned tomatoes, herbs like basil and oregano, and a pinch of salt and pepper. While the sauce deepens in flavor, prepare a simple béchamel sauce by gently cooking butter and flour, then whisking in warm milk until smooth. This creamy layer balances the acidity of the tomato sauce beautifully. When assembling, start with a thin coat of sauce at the bottom of your baking dish to prevent sticking. Then alternate pasta sheets with meat sauce, béchamel, and shredded cheese—mozzarella and parmesan are my go-to’s for that perfect golden crust. Lasagne is flexible; you can add sautéed vegetables like spinach or mushrooms to the layers for extra nutrition and flavor. Leftovers also reheat well, making it a great make-ahead dinner option. Cooking lasagne for dinner is not only a delicious treat but also a wonderful way to bring family and friends together around the table.
