... Read moreThe story behind 'Phoenix in the 90’s' runs deeper than just a song; it's a journey through my own family's incredible past and a tribute to the vibrant Phoenix rock scene of the 1990s. When I set out to create this track, I knew I wanted to capture the essence of my parents’ life during that era. My dad, Cobie, a musician in rock bands like "Popcorn Jungle," and my mom, Jan, his dedicated photographer, lived a life full of passion and music that truly inspired me. To truly immerse myself, I spent countless hours sifting through their old treasures. Imagine boxes filled with faded concert tickets, tattered posters, and stacks of photographs, each one a tiny window into their world. It wasn't just a research project; it felt like time travel. I saw names of venues I'd only heard stories about, like the iconic Desert Sky Pavilion, and even found tickets for legendary bands like Rush from 1992 and the Astie Boys that my parents had attended. There were also relics from my dad's bands, with mentions of "Ditz Management" and "State of Grace," hinting at the bustling local music industry they were a part of. The energy captured in those photos – the gritty stages, the enthusiastic crowds, the raw emotion of live performance – was palpable. It made me feel like I was right there with them, experiencing the pulse of the Phoenix rock scene. They truly lived for their music, never giving up on their dreams, which resonated deeply with my own artistic journey. What struck me most was the sheer dedication and love they poured into their craft. My mom, Jan, with her camera always ready, capturing the raw energy of my dad, Cobie, and his bandmates on stage. It’s a powerful image that has come full circle in my own life. Today, I'm an indie pop artist, and my husband has taken on the role of my photographer. It’s a beautiful, serendipitous mirroring of their relationship, and it feels incredibly cool to be walking a similar path, experiencing the same joys and challenges of creating music and sharing it with the world. This connection to their past makes my present even more meaningful. Through 'Phoenix in the 90’s,' I wanted to bottle that feeling of relentless pursuit, of living authentically, and of finding happiness in your passion. It’s a piece of my family’s history, but also a universal message about chasing your dreams, no matter what decade you're in. I hope that by sharing their story and my interpretation of it, others will feel inspired to look back at their own family's legacies, find the stories that ignite their spirit, and live their lives to the fullest, just as my parents did in the vibrant 90s Phoenix rock scene. This song is a thank you to them, and an invitation to you, to find your own phoenix moment.
