TIPS FOR INTRODUCING NEW PETS
When our dog Max was 9 months old, we decided to add a kitten to the family! Sesame was just 10 weeks old when we adopted him, and he had never been around a dog before. He was scared and hissed at Max for the first couple days. It didn’t take long for Sesame to warm up and want to play with Max. Now they have been inseparable for over 2 years. ❤️
This is how we got them to be best buddies:
1. Gave our kitten his space. We kept Max away from him while he sniffed around his new home. A pet gate would be helpful for this!
2. Swap scents: you could do this different ways, but we used a blanket. Our dog and our cat each had a blanket in their space that they laid on. The next day we swapped the blankets so they each could get used to the others’ scent.
3. Start slowly: we let Max slowly get closer to Sesame while keeping him under control. We let Max see Sesame without being able to touch him.
4. Only let them see each other while supervised by us. While we went to work, we kept our kitten and dog in separate rooms.
5. Face to face meeting: let them see each other without any barriers in the way. Keep it short at first, and then you can gradually let them coexist together!
