The skin is the body’s largest organ, responsible for regulation and synthesis of vital substances like vitamin D. It consists of multiple layers, including the epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous layers, each with distinct roles. The epidermis provides a waterproof barrier, primarily made up of keratinocytes and melanocytes affecting skin pigmentation. The dermis contains connective tissues and is where hair follicles and glands are located. Nails, formed from keratin, protect the fingertips and are important indicators of overall health. Factors such as nutrient deficiency, hormonal changes, and genetics influence the condition of hair and nails. Common disorders include acne, eczema, and various dermatological conditions which can manifest as rashes or changes in texture and color. It is important for nursing students to learn about these aspects, both for their professional knowledge and personal well-being. Regular self-care practices including hydration, proper nutrition, and stress management can greatly improve health outcomes in individuals studying nursing.
