My review: this book was so cute! I love the idea behind the start of Callum and Laylas relationship. I love how he falls for her and that he calls her honey. I love that they name their first child after her nickname!

... Read moreOkay, so I just HAVE to talk about 'What Hurts Us' by Maggie Gates! Seriously, if you're looking for a romance that grabs your heart and doesn't let go, this one is it. It's the first book in the Falls Creek series, and let me tell you, it sets the bar incredibly high. I gave it a solid 5 out of 5 stars, and I rarely do that!
What made this book so special for me? It's the way Maggie Gates crafts a love story that feels both epic and completely real. From the moment Callum and Layla's paths first cross, you can just feel the sparks. Callum, our brooding hero, is a dedicated police officer, and Layla is an amazing RN. Their professions alone bring such interesting dynamics to their relationship, adding layers of devotion and sometimes, unexpected challenges. I loved seeing how their demanding lives intertwined and how they found solace and strength in each other.
One of the things that absolutely melted my heart was Callum's nickname for Layla – 'honey.' It's such a simple, sweet gesture, but it speaks volumes about his affection and tenderness towards her. It became this little symbol of their growing connection, and honestly, every time he said it, I just swooned! It's those small, intimate details that make their love story so believable and heartwarming.
The journey these two take is filled with all the feels. You get to witness their relationship blossom from its unique beginnings, navigating both personal struggles and the external pressures of their challenging careers. The author does a fantastic job of building their connection, making you root for them every step of the way. And without giving too much away, seeing their family grow, hinted at by moments like finding out about an ultrasound, was just the most beautiful conclusion to their initial story. It really shows how their love evolves and deepens over time.
Beyond the main couple, I found the setting of Falls Creek to be charming and immersive. It feels like a place you'd want to visit, with a community that plays a subtle but important role in the story. There are also hints of excitement and action, perhaps with elements like a motorcycle or even a helicopter in the background, adding a touch of thrill to their lives without overshadowing the romance. It keeps you engaged and wondering what might happen next.
If you enjoy contemporary romance with a strong, protective hero and a resilient, caring heroine, draped in genuine emotion and endearing moments, you absolutely need to pick up 'What Hurts Us.' It’s a beautifully written story about finding your soulmate, building a family, and overcoming obstacles together. I finished it feeling utterly satisfied and instantly wanting to re-read it. Trust me, you won't regret diving into Callum and Layla's world!
