Stepping back into my high school days in the early 2000s always brings a smile to my face. I remember the year 2000 specifically, feeling like a whole new era was beginning. Everything felt so fresh and full of possibility, especially for us teenagers trying to figure things out. I remember getting my first flip phone, and that was a huge deal! Texting was a new concept, and we mainly used it for quick, shorthand messages. Dial-up internet meant waiting forever for a page to load, accompanied by that unforgettable screeching sound, but it was worth it for AIM chat sessions after school. MySpace was just starting to become a thing towards the mid-2000s, but in the earlier years, it was all about instant messaging and landline calls to coordinate weekend plans. Social life revolved around simple pleasures. Hanging out at the local mall was a classic weekend activity, just browsing stores, grabbing snacks from the food court, and people-watching. We’d pile into someone’s beat-up car and just drive around with the windows down, music blaring, singing along at the top of our lungs. School dances were epic, filled with awkward slow dances and energetic group choreography to the latest hits. Every October, the anticipation for Halloween parties and school events was palpable, creating unforgettable memories. We still relied heavily on textbooks and library research, but the internet was slowly becoming a tool for projects and presentations.
