my favorite eye primers ✨🤭
i love a good eyeshadow look (my pinterest feed is filled with them 😔), but for most lighter colors to show up or for it to last the day, i need a good eyeshadow primer. these are my top three:
juvias place i prep i prime eye primer (8/10): VERY good coverage, and makes shimmers realky stand out. the formula needs a little work because it's separates and the packaging makes it hard to get a small amount but other than that I really love it.
💰Price:$12
elf power grip primer (9/10): I initially got this to use with concealer but because of how tacky it is, it works really well with eyeshadows, especially if I want to go with a matte look. because of how tacky it is it's harder to blend eyeshadow so gradients take a bit of effort.
💰Price: $10
morphe eyelid primer (8/10): this primer is translucent so it's perfect for in between days, and it has good grip, but it's not tacky the point where it's hard to do gradients like the elf one.
💰Price: $10

Hey beauties! So you've seen my top picks for eyelid primers, but let's dive a little deeper into why these affordable gems are essential for your makeup routine and how to make the most of them. Many of you might be wondering about the 'best eye base' out there, and honestly, it really comes down to your personal needs and what kind of eyeshadow look you're going for! First off, let's talk about application. For any eye primer, less is often more. A tiny dot is usually enough for both eyelids. I like to dab it on with my finger and gently blend it out. For the Juvia's Place I Prep I Prime Eye Primer, which is super pigmented and helps remove any discoloration, I find it's best to warm it up a little on the back of my hand first if it's separated, then apply. Its very tacky nature is fantastic for making those shimmers really pop and adhere flawlessly, giving you vibrant color payoff that lasts. Now, the e.l.f. Power Grip Primer is a total game-changer, especially if you're into matte eyeshadows. Because it dries completely transparent and offers such an incredible grip, it essentially creates a canvas that grabs onto powder shadows, intensifying their color and seriously extending wear time. However, as I mentioned, gradients can be a bit trickier with how tacky it is. My tip? Work quickly and use less product if you're planning a blended look, or apply a thin layer of setting powder over it before your eyeshadow to give you a bit more playtime. This primer is also brilliant if you're struggling with eyeshadow creasing – it locks everything in place! Then there's the Morphe Eyelid Primer. This translucent option is perfect for those 'no-makeup' makeup days or when you just need a reliable, medium-coverage base without adding extra color. It still provides good grip, ensuring your eyeshadow stays put for about 4 hours, but it's not so tacky that it hinders blending, making it great for creating seamless gradients. It's my go-to when I want a natural look with good longevity. The swatches I did really show how different these textures are! A common question I see is about 'under-eye primer for dry skin.' It's important to distinguish between eyelid primers and under-eye primers. While these three are fantastic for your eyelids to hold eyeshadow, true under-eye primers are typically formulated differently – they're often more hydrating and designed to smooth fine lines and prevent concealer creasing, not necessarily to grip eyeshadow. If you have dry eyelids, make sure to moisturize your eyelids lightly before applying your eye primer, and consider translucent options like the Morphe one, or even a very thin layer of the Elf. Ultimately, the 'world best primer' is the one that meets your specific needs. Do you need intense color payoff and shimmer enhancement? Juvia's Place is your friend. Want your matte shadows to stay put forever? Elf Power Grip is amazing. Looking for a reliable, translucent base for everyday wear or easy blending? Morphe has got you covered. Don't be afraid to experiment to find your personal holy grail!
