how avoid burnout this exam szn 😓🫶
Even though it can feel very isolating at the moment, burnout is very common to happen to a lot of college students, especially at the end of the semester. It has happened to me a couple of times and it’s always an awful time to go through, so I thought that could share some tips that I used to help avoid coming to that point of stress and exhaustion :)
Break down large tasks:
Large tasks that keep getting larger the longer you leave them can put a lot of strain on you. What I like to do to avoid this for course-long assignments is to see what they are at the start of a semester and dedicate each month to completing a separate part. Here are some other ideas for breaking down larger tasks:
course paper | one paragraph every week
laundry | one load at a time to avoid buildup
clean room | One corner every day
homework | one subject a day
Stay healthy:
Sleep: I know it’s hard, but try to get at least 7-8 hours of sleep every night. Being physically exhausted very quickly can lead to burnout. Being tired will also make you less productive during the day, leading to more work building up, so it is just a good idea overall to get in a good amount of sleep.
Workout: Maintain a stable workout routine, even if it is just 10 minutes a day. If you don’t have time in the day to go to the gym or go for a run, I would say to follow a YouTube workout so that you have something that keeps you active.
Manage your time:
Plan out what you’re doing the day before, so you don’t waste time picking what to do. I feel like this is where a lot of my dedicated study time goes to waste, and so that is why I either have one subject for the entire day or I have a set of assignments that I know I have to complete.
Try to minimize “in-between” periods, and time spent between classes or activities. Instead, try and fill them with something productive, like assigned readings or discussion post forms.
Relax:
Living with anxiety worsens any situation, so try and take a step back to reduce anxiety. Go outside, eat your favorite food, catch up with a friend, and remember that life is short so avoid obsessing over it :)

Exam season can be particularly stressful for students, leading many to experience burnout. It’s essential to understand that you are not alone in this struggle. Implementing a productive study routine can significantly reduce stress levels. A critical aspect is breaking down your study materials into manageable pieces. For instance, instead of cramming for multiple subjects simultaneously, allocate specific days for focused study sessions. This not only helps retain information better but also prevents feelings of being overwhelmed. Incorporating physical exercise into your daily routine can also have a profound impact on mental health. Studies show that even brief workout sessions release endorphins, which enhance mood and energy levels, helping combat the fatigue often associated with extended periods of study. Sleep cannot be overlooked; it is during sleep that your brain consolidates information. Striving for 7-8 hours of quality sleep nightly enhances cognitive functions, enabling students to perform better in exams. Remember to take breaks. Short intervals between study bursts allow your mind to rejuvenate, improving concentration and retention. Engaging in relaxation techniques such as mindfulness or simple breathing exercises can further help reduce anxiety. Additionally, make sure to connect with friends or support groups. Sharing experiences and seeking advice from fellow students can provide emotional support and valuable insights to combat burnout. Lastly, don't hesitate to seek help from college counselors or mental health professionals if you find the pressure too much to handle. Prioritizing your mental health is paramount for academic success. By following these tips, you can navigate your exam season with resilience and poise.

romanticizing studying is the only way I can get through it!! I put on dark academia music and rain sounds with my headphones, my "study perfume" (it helps with brain focus and function for me), and wear a cute but comfy outfit!
