Moon view from Manhattan next to 24/7 highway 🌸

... Read moreHey fellow stargazers and photography enthusiasts! If you're anything like me, you've probably wondered if it's even worth trying to capture the night sky in a city as bright as New York. Specifically, getting a great 'moon vista' from Gantry Plaza State Park sounds like a dream, right? With all that light pollution, it feels like an uphill battle. But I'm here to tell you, it's absolutely doable, and incredibly rewarding! My first few attempts at astrophotography from Gantry Plaza were... challenging, to say the least. The glow from Manhattan was relentless. But through trial and error, I've picked up some tricks I'd love to share, especially when you're aiming for those stunning moon shots. First, timing is everything for a good moon vista. While a full moon is breathtaking, its brightness can actually make it harder to capture fainter stars if you're trying for a broader night sky. For just the moon, a full or nearly full moon rising or setting over the Manhattan skyline from Gantry Plaza provides an amazing opportunity for composition. Check a moon phase calendar and an app like PhotoPills or The Photographer's Ephemeris to predict the moon's path. I find the piers at Gantry Plaza offer fantastic vantage points, letting you incorporate the iconic Pepsi-Cola sign or the city's architectural gems into your shot. Now, let's talk about battling light pollution. This is where most urban astrophotographers get discouraged. You don't need a super expensive setup to start, but a few things make a huge difference. A sturdy tripod is non-negotiable – even the slightest wobble can ruin a long exposure. A fast lens (think f/2.8 or wider) will be your best friend, letting in more light in shorter times. For camera settings, I usually start with a low ISO (like 100-400) to keep noise down, then open my aperture wide (e.g., f/2.8), and adjust shutter speed. You'll likely need exposures of a few seconds for the moon, or much longer for fainter objects (though moon movement limits this for sharp shots). Experiment with bracketing your exposures to capture details in both the bright moon and darker sky. One technique I've found useful is manual focusing. Auto-focus struggles in the dark. Zoom into the moon or a distant light on your camera's live view and adjust manually until it's super sharp. Post-processing is also incredibly important. Software like Adobe Lightroom or Photoshop can help reduce light pollution's orange glow and enhance details. Don't be afraid to pull back on highlights and boost shadows carefully. While specialized light pollution filters exist, for moon shots, they might not be necessary and can sometimes introduce color casts. Finally, remember composition and patience. Gantry Plaza offers so much more than just the moon itself. Frame the moon with the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building, or even the reflections on the East River. Sometimes, waiting for a break in the clouds or for the right moment when the moon is perfectly positioned can make all the difference. It's a unique experience capturing the cosmos from such an urban setting, and the satisfaction of getting that perfect shot despite the city lights is truly unmatched. Happy shooting!
