Mayor Mumdani updates on winter storm response.
New York City is currently managing the aftermath of Winter Storm Fern, which has blanketed the city with 10โ14 inches of snow and ushered in the coldest temperatures the region has seen in eight years.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani (who took office in January 2026) and city agencies are currently in full mobilization mode. Here is the latest update for today, Monday, January 26, 2026:
โ๏ธ Weather & Travel Status
* Winter Storm Warning: Remains in effect until 6:00 PM tonight.
* Travel Advisory: A Hazardous Travel Advisory is active. Officials are strongly urging New Yorkers to stay off the roads to allow for plowing and emergency response.
* Alternate Side Parking: Suspended for today, Monday, January 26. However, parking meters remain in effect.
๐ซ Schools & City Services
* Public Schools: All NYC public school buildings are closed today.
* Elementary students have shifted to remote learning.
* High school and some middle school students have the day off due to a previously scheduled professional development day.
* Warming Centers: The city has opened warming centers in all five boroughs (two per borough) to help residents escape the extreme cold. You can find locations by calling 311.
๐ Transportation Updates
* Subways & Buses: Operating on a regular Sunday/reduced schedule with service adjustments as needed. Articulated buses have been pulled from service, and others are using tire chains.
* LIRR & Metro-North: Operating on reduced schedules.
* NYC Ferry: Service remains suspended until further notice due to whiteout conditions on the waterways.
๐ ๏ธ Cleanup Efforts
* The Department of Sanitation (DSNY) has deployed over 2,200 plows and 700 salt spreaders. Plowing began once accumulation hit 2 inches and is continuing around the clock.
* Code Blue: Is currently in effect. This means the city is actively scouring the streets every two hours to bring vulnerable New Yorkers into shelters without the standard intake paperwork.
Tip: If you see someone in need of shelter or spot a dangerous condition like a downed power line, please call 311 or 911 for emergencies.
