Let’s talk about your brain on scrolling

2/11 Edited to

... Read moreScrolling through social media or endless feeds often leads to what is called a 'flow' state, where your brain becomes deeply engaged in the activity, sometimes losing track of time. This time distortion effect can cause hours to feel like minutes, which explains why scrolling is so addictive yet mentally draining. From personal experience, I've noticed that setting intentional limits on scrolling time helps maintain a healthier balance. Instead of mindlessly scrolling, I now approach it as a brief break with a conscious goal—whether it’s catching up with news or relaxing briefly. This shift made a significant difference in my mental clarity. Additionally, being aware of the brain’s reaction to scrolling can inspire smarter self-care strategies. For instance, frequent breaks during scrolling sessions prevent cognitive overload and support better focus throughout the day. Incorporating mindfulness or breathing exercises before and after scrolling can also reset your brain, reducing feelings of restlessness or anxiety linked with prolonged screen time. Remember, while scrolling can be a flow-inducing activity, it’s essential to balance it with purposeful offline moments. Practicing this balance can enhance your overall self-care and mental well-being in our digital age.
