July reads and ratings 💌

2024/8/14 Edited to

... Read moreAs a passionate reader, I've always felt that a book's true magic goes beyond just its plot. When I look back at my 'RECENT READS & THEIR RATINGS' from July, including titles like 'A Novel Love Story', 'NOT ANOTHER LOVE SONG', and 'NOT IN LOVE', I'm not just thinking about whether I liked the characters or the ending. I'm also reflecting on deeper elements that truly make a story stand out, or sometimes, fall a little flat. One of the biggest factors that can make or break a reading experience for me is 'uneven pacing'. Have you ever picked up a book, absolutely loving the first few chapters, only to find yourself slogging through the middle section, wishing the story would just pick up the pace? Or perhaps a crucial moment feels rushed, leaving you wanting more detail or emotional impact? That's uneven pacing, and it can seriously affect how immersed you feel in a story. For instance, in a good rom-com, the slow burn should feel earned, building anticipation without dragging, while the eventual confession should feel like a satisfying crescendo, not a sudden jump. When the pacing is off, even a great premise can lose its sparkle, making it harder to connect with the characters and their journey. I always try to note in my reviews if a book kept me glued to the pages or if I found myself glancing at the page count, hoping for a quicker resolution. Another fascinating aspect to consider, and something I've been thinking about more lately, is what it means for a book to portray a 'broken country'. This phrase can conjure images of dystopian futures or war-torn lands, but I think its meaning can be much broader, even in the romance and contemporary fiction I often read. It could refer to a society grappling with deep-seated issues, a community rebuilding after a disaster, or even the metaphorical 'brokenness' within a character's past or their family dynamics. For example, a character in 'A PHOTO FINISH' or 'ALIVE AND WELLS' might come from a difficult background, and their journey to healing or finding love involves navigating their own personal 'broken country' of past hurts or societal expectations. How an author crafts this background, whether it's a literal setting or the internal landscape of a character, adds immense depth and realism to the story. It allows for richer character development and challenges that feel truly meaningful, making the eventual triumph or resolution all the more impactful. These underlying themes are what elevate a simple story into something truly memorable, prompting me to give those higher ratings. Ultimately, when I share my 'RECENT READS & THEIR RATINGS', I hope to offer more than just a number. I want to give fellow book lovers a glimpse into what made these stories resonate, or why they might have fallen short, touching on elements like pacing and thematic depth that contribute to a truly engaging read.
