5 Course Dinner Table Setting

Hosting a five-course dinner can feel daunting, but setting the table shouldn't be! I recently put together a beautiful spread, and I want to share my go-to approach for an elegant five-course table setting that truly elevates the dining experience. It's all about making your guests feel special and anticipating their needs for each delicious course. First, let's talk about the foundation: the charger plate. I always start with a beautiful charger, like a metallic gold one, under the main dinner plate. This serves as a decorative base and helps define each guest's space. On top of the charger, I layer the main dinner plate, which will be used for the entrée, and then often a smaller salad or appetizer plate on top, removed after its course. This creates a visually appealing and functional stack for your 5-course meal set up. Next comes the flatware. Think of it as working from the outside in for each course. On the left, starting from the outermost, you'll place the salad fork, then the fish fork (if your menu includes fish), and finally the main dinner fork closest to the plate. On the right, it's the soup spoon (outermost), followed by the fish knife, and then the dinner knife (blade facing the plate). If you're serving a dessert, don't forget the small dessert fork and spoon placed horizontally above the dinner plate, with the fork tines pointing right and the spoon bowl pointing left.
