I have been thinking about my 20’s and how to navigate financially through my 20’s and prepare myself for the future and what can come next for me in my 20’s.I think about money wayyy too often but I was think about what people think is an ideal monthly income or how much people think they need to make monthly to be financially stable. In my 20’s leading to early 30’s I think I ideally want to make $60,000 a year to live comfortably as a “single” lifestyle, yes I have a bf but I’m not paying for anything other then myself and bills.
Is $60,000 yearly unrealistic for someone in their 20’s?
What are some ways you found to increase your income?

... Read moreIt’s funny how sometimes the most personal symbols can become the biggest motivators. For me, my financial freedom tattoo isn't just ink on my skin; it's a daily reminder of the goals I'm striving for and the life I want to build. Every time I see it, it pushes me to think smarter about my money and stay disciplined on my journey to financial independence.
But beyond the inspiration, real financial freedom takes action, especially when you're in your 20s and just starting out. When I first started thinking about that $60,000 yearly goal, it felt pretty huge, and honestly, a little intimidating. I wondered, 'Is $60,000 yearly unrealistic for someone in their 20s living a single lifestyle?' After a lot of research and talking to friends, I realized it's ambitious but totally achievable with the right strategies. Here’s what I’ve been discovering and incorporating into my own life to grow my income and get closer to that ideal:
First, I’ve focused on upskilling. The job market is constantly evolving, and staying stagnant won't get you far. I've taken online courses in areas related to my career that are in high demand, which has allowed me to negotiate for better pay or take on freelance projects. Think about skills that can boost your value at your current job or open doors to new opportunities. For instance, learning a new software, data analysis, or digital marketing can add significant value.
Next, diversifying income streams has been a game-changer. Relying on just one paycheck can feel risky. I've explored side hustles that align with my interests and skills. This could be anything from freelance writing, graphic design, social media management, tutoring, or even selling digital products. Even small amounts from a side hustle can add up quickly and make a big difference in your monthly budget, helping you reach that ideal income faster.
I’ve also become much more intentional about budgeting and tracking my expenses. It sounds basic, but knowing exactly where every dollar goes is empowering. I use an app to categorize my spending, which helps me identify areas where I can cut back and reallocate funds towards savings or investments. This doesn't mean depriving myself, but rather making conscious choices about my money.
Finally, I'm slowly dipping my toes into investing. It feels scary at first, but even small, consistent contributions to a low-cost index fund or an employer-sponsored retirement plan can make a huge impact over time, thanks to compound interest. Learning the basics of investing has shown me how my money can actually work for me, rather than just sitting idle.
My journey to financial freedom is still ongoing, and setting a $60,000 goal in my 20s feels right for my 'single' lifestyle, allowing comfort without excessive luxury. It's about building a solid foundation now so that future me has more choices and less stress. What ways have you found to increase your income or achieve your financial goals?
