Thanks to #duolingo I’ve gotten to learn the Korean alphabet, and then some. I can read it better than I can speak it, but I feel like that’s the case for a lot of people learning a new language (especially one with a different alphabet system). What inspired me to start learning Korean was my love of kdramas. I watched them so often in lockdown in 2020, that I started learning what certain phrases meant. I decided I wanted to learn it properly, because I really enjoyed how the language sounded (I like watching the shows with English subtitles so I could enjoy the actors performances in Korean). I decided when starting Korean to also refresh my Spanish, because I hadn’t used it since my college days outside of chatting with my Puerto Rican family members from time to time. I’m much more confident of my Spanish speaking ability because I had a couple of years experience with that in high school and college. I spend a half an hour per day or so, switching between the two languages.
Duolingo isn’t the only app I’ve been using though! I use Drops for five minutes everyday, Memrise, and Eggbun. Papago is a great translator as well. I’m far from perfect with these other languages, but it gives me something to look forward to learning each and every day. Who says you can’t learn new things as an adult? If you have other suggestions of programs I didn’t list, I would love to hear them!
