Juliette Gordon Low on this day in history

On March 12, 1912, Juliette Gordon Low brought together 18 girls in Savannah, Georgia for the first meeting of what would become the Girl Scouts. What started as a small gathering became a global movement empowering girls to lead, serve, and grow with confidence.

Low’s journey was not without challenges. She lived with significant hearing loss after repeated ear infections and an injury to her eardrum. She also battled recurring illness, including malaria, and later faced breast cancer—yet she continued building opportunities for girls to learn leadership and independence.

Her vision created a space where girls of all abilities and backgrounds could develop skills, courage, and community. Over a century later, that first meeting continues to inspire millions.

... Read moreReflecting on Juliette Gordon Low’s remarkable journey, it's inspiring how she transformed personal adversity into a powerful legacy. Despite facing significant hearing loss caused by repeated ear infections and an injury to her eardrum, along with battling recurring malaria and breast cancer, Juliette's determination never wavered. Through my own volunteer experience with youth organizations, I’ve witnessed firsthand how creating supportive spaces for young girls can foster courage and independence—principles that Juliette championed over a century ago. Her ability to persist through health struggles and still dedicate herself to building a vibrant community for girls is a testament to her resilience and vision. The Girl Scouts, which began from a simple meeting with 18 girls in Savannah, Georgia, has grown into a global movement providing girls of diverse backgrounds the skills to lead and serve. This encourages not only practical skill-building but also instills confidence and a sense of belonging. What resonates most about Juliette Gordon Low's legacy is her commitment to inclusivity—welcoming girls of all abilities and backgrounds to develop their potential. This approach has set a standard for youth empowerment programs worldwide. In today’s context, her story reminds us that challenges, whether physical or societal, don’t have to define someone's impact. Instead, they can inspire deeper understanding and foster communities centered on support, growth, and leadership. For anyone inspired by history and empowered youth movements, Juliette Gordon Low’s story is a compelling example of overcoming obstacles to create lasting change. Her work continues to inspire millions, serving as a beacon of hope and empowerment for girls globally.
