Immolator

When I first got my hands on the Sisters of Battle Immolator Tank, I knew it was going to be a special project. There's just something so iconic about its design, especially those beautiful, gothic stained glass windows! Painting this model was honestly one of the most fun experiences I've had with a Warhammer 40K kit in a long time. My main goal was to really make those stained glass panels pop. I started by giving the tank a solid base coat, making sure everything was smooth before diving into the details. For the stained glass, I approached it almost like a miniature art piece. I began with a dark base color for the 'lead' lining, usually a deep brown or black, to really define the individual panes. Then came the exciting part: choosing the colors for the glass itself! I opted for vibrant jewel tones – deep blues, rich reds, and luminous greens – to give it that authentic cathedral window feel. A little trick I found helpful was to paint the lighter colors first, then gradually build up the darker shades towards the edges of each pane, creating a sense of depth. For that ethereal glow, I used a very thin layer of a lighter, almost fluorescent color in the center of each pane, then carefully glazed over it with a thinned-down version of the main color. It really helped to create the illusion of light passing through the glass. The final touch was a super fine highlight on the raised 'lead' lines with a metallic silver to simulate the metal framework. It was painstaking work, but so incredibly rewarding to see the effect come to life. Beyond the stained glass, I also focused on the overall grimdark aesthetic of the Immolator. I used a combination of drybrushing and washes to bring out the details on the armor plates and add some realistic weathering. The flamers and heavy bolters got a good metallic treatment, with a touch of heat discoloration on the muzzles to show they’ve seen some action on the battlefield. Every little detail, from the purity seals to the intricate filigree, was given individual attention. What I loved most about this project was how much creative freedom the Immolator offers. It's not just a tank; it's a mobile shrine, and that really inspired my paint scheme.
