Trust the (locs) process 💕

... Read moreIt's so rewarding to look back at your loc journey, isn't it? I remember when my locs were just starting out, and now I absolutely love seeing how much they've grown and all the beautiful styles I can create. One of my absolute favorites, and one that always gets compliments, is the loc petal updo! It might look intricate, but trust me, it’s surprisingly easy once you get the hang of it, and it really showcases the beauty of your locs. Why choose a petal updo for your locs? Well, beyond being incredibly elegant and perfect for both casual outings and special occasions, it’s a fantastic way to keep your locs neatly styled and off your neck, especially on warmer days. Plus, it really highlights the texture and length you’ve worked so hard for. If you're like me, you've probably heard 'loc your hair, it's gonna grow!' a hundred times, and it's true! The growth journey is amazing, and styling is the reward. Ready to try it? Here’s my simple guide to achieving a stunning loc petal updo: Start with moisturized locs: Make sure your locs are clean and well-moisturized. A light mist of water and a leave-in conditioner or oil can make them more pliable and easier to work with. If your locs are dry, they'll be harder to shape. Gather your supplies: You’ll need some small elastic bands (preferably clear or matching your hair color), bobby pins, and maybe a little edge control for a sleek finish. Create your base ponytail: Decide where you want your updo to sit. For a classic look, gather your locs into a high ponytail at the crown of your head. Secure it firmly with an elastic band. Don’t pull too tight! Form the 'petals': Take a small section of locs from the ponytail, about 3-5 locs depending on their thickness. Gently loop this section, creating a 'petal' shape. You can loop it under the base of the ponytail or just create a soft curve. Secure each petal: Use a bobby pin to secure the looped section in place against your scalp or the base of the ponytail. The key is to hide the pin as much as possible within the locs. Repeat, repeat, repeat: Continue taking small sections of locs, looping them, and pinning them around the base of your ponytail. Overlap the petals slightly to create a fuller, more continuous 'flower' effect. Don't worry about perfection; organic shapes often look best! Finish with the ends: Once you’ve created petals all around, you might have some loc ends sticking out. You can either tuck these ends under other petals and pin them, or let a few ends hang playfully for a more relaxed look. Refine and secure: Gently adjust the petals to ensure they look balanced and full. Use extra bobby pins wherever needed to secure loose locs or make the style feel stable. A quick spritz of holding spray can help too, especially for the edges. Maintaining healthy locs is crucial for beautiful styles like this. Regular washing, moisturizing, and occasional retwists (if that's part of your routine) will keep your locs strong and vibrant. It’s been an incredible journey watching my locs grow, and now being able to style them in so many creative ways, like this petal updo, is truly the best part. I hope this helps you rock your own stunning loc styles!
