My locs are 2 years 🌿😍
I started out with my sides shaved my. The center of my hair is 2 years the sides are around 10 mos. #locgrowth #locs
Since many of you are curious about the locs journey and what to expect, I wanted to share more about the different stages I’ve experienced firsthand. It’s truly a marathon, not a sprint, and understanding these phases can make the process so much more enjoyable and less prone to frustration. My main locs are now celebrating their two-year mark, while the sides, which I decided to shave and restart, are around 10 months old. This gives me a unique perspective on different stages simultaneously! Here's my take on the distinct stages of loc growth: 1. Starter Locs (0-6 months): The Foundation This is where it all begins! Whether you opt for coils, two-strand twists, braids, or even comb coils, this stage is all about establishing the foundation for your locs. I remember my starter locs feeling so new and delicate. They were prone to unraveling, especially after washes, which can be a bit disheartening at first. My biggest tip for this stage is patience and *minimal manipulation*. You want to give your hair a chance to lock without constantly disturbing the process. Keeping them moisturized but not oversaturated is key. For those with shaved sides like mine, integrating new growth can be a fun challenge, creating a cool, evolving look! 2. Budding/Frizzing Stage (6-12 months): The Transformation Begins Oh, the budding stage! This was probably the wildest and most 'unruly' stage for me, and my 10-month-old side locs are definitely in this phase now. Your hair starts to knot and swell, and you'll notice a lot of frizz – don't panic! That frizz is actually a good sign; it means your hair is doing its thing and forming into actual locs. My advice here is to embrace the frizz. It’s a natural part of the locking process. While they might not look as 'neat' as you’d imagine, this is where the magic truly happens. Focus on keeping your scalp clean and your locs hydrated. I found that light oils and rosewater sprays were my best friends during this period. 3. Teenage/Growing Stage (12-18 months): Finding Their Identity Around my first year, I started seeing real progress. My locs became more uniform, thicker, and less prone to unraveling than in the budding stage. They also started to gain some real length and weight. You still get some frizz, but they feel more solid and defined. This is where you really start to feel like 'wow, I have locs!' and can begin to play with more styling options. Maintenance here is about consistent re-twists (if that’s your preferred method) and continuing to nourish your hair from root to tip. It’s a bit like a moody teenager – sometimes they look perfect, other times they have a mind of their own, but they're growing beautifully. 4. Maturing Stage (18-24+ months): Established and Strong Now that my main locs are 2 years old, they’re definitely in this mature stage. They are fully formed, dense, strong, and have a beautiful weight to them. The maintenance is less about worrying if they'll unravel and more about keeping them clean, moisturized, and healthy for the long term. At this point, your locs are quite solid, and the individual locs are well-defined. Styling becomes even more versatile, and you can truly appreciate the uniqueness of your locs. It’s such a rewarding feeling to look back at how far they've come and see the strength and beauty in them. Every loc journey is unique, influenced by hair type, maintenance routine, and even environmental factors. But these stages give you a good roadmap of what to generally expect. Embrace the process, celebrate every inch of growth, and remember that patience truly is a virtue when it comes to locs!
