A Peak Inside Our Late Victorian Home

A little peek inside the late Victorian we purchased about 6-7 months ago! There's A LOT we plan on doing as far as restoration and renovation! Our goal is to remove all the white to bring back the original wood, refinish the floors, and repair/refinish the plaster walls, and of course painting with deep, rich colors in each room. Going to take some time but it'll be worth it!

One of the key restoration goals for this style of home is to remove modern white paint that often covers original woodwork, revealing the natural warmth and character of the aged wood beneath. This process can include stripping paint from crown moldings, baseboards, window frames, and doors, and requires patience and the right materials to avoid damage. Refinishing floors is another essential step in bringing a Victorian home back to life. Depending on the condition of the hardwood beneath, the floors may need sanding and sealing to enhance their beauty and durability. Using traditional stains and finishes that complement the period’s aesthetic can help maintain authenticity. Victorian plaster walls often have unique textures and sometimes ornamental moldings that require attentive repair and refinishing. Matching historical plaster techniques might involve patching cracks with lime-based materials and repainting walls in deep, rich colors that were popular in the era, such as jewel tones and earthy hues. These colors create cozy, elegant interiors, something modern homes often lack. For those undertaking a similar restoration, researching Victorian architectural styles and interior design trends can provide inspiration and guidance. Engaging with local historic preservation societies or forums like #victorian, #victorianhome, and #antique can connect you with valuable resources and expert advice. Ultimately, restoring a late Victorian home takes time and dedication but rewards homeowners with a timeless, charming residence full of history and personality. Each restoration step not only preserves architectural heritage but also creates a warm, inviting space that tells a story through its authentic design elements.
