Storms: Spiritual connections, rituals and more⛈️

Rainy and stormy days feel different for me—and not just because I love curling up listening to thunder or watching the sky go from light to deep charcoal.

There’s something spiritual about it. Something ancient. Storms been talking to the earth way before we ever came along, and some of us still know how to listen. Rain ain’t just water falling from the sky—it’s energy, it’s movement, it’s cleansing, it’s divine.

Across cultures, storms are powerful symbols. In the Yoruba tradition, the Orisha Shango rules thunder and lightning—he’s a god of justice, passion, and fire, and when you hear thunder crack, that’s his ax swinging through the sky.

In Norse mythology, Thor ain’t just a Marvel character—he was the god of thunder and storms, protector of humanity, and every lightning strike was his hammer, Mjölnir, hitting the heavens.

In Native American traditions, especially among Plains tribes, Thunder Beings are sacred spirits who bring rain for crops, cleanse the land, and carry messages from the Creator.

And over in Hinduism, the storm god Indra rides in with lightning and monsoon rains, balancing destruction and life-giving force.

Rain and storm water aren’t just some tap water from the sky—they’re charged. They carry lightning’s energy, wind’s whispers, and sky’s sorrow. That’s why, when I tell you I love rainy days, I mean it from the soul. Rain is drama and romance, but it’s also medicine. It clears out the air and the energy. It hushes the noise. It feeds the roots.

Spiritually, storm water is gathered to be used in rituals for cleansing, protection, banishing, power, and transformation. It’s especially strong if you collect it during an actual thunderstorm—where lightning has touched the earth, the vibration changes. Some witches and rootworkers call that “charged” water. It’s like liquid thunder.

You can store storm water in a glass jar or bottle, label it with the date and type of storm (thunder, lightning, heavy rain, hurricane, etc.), and keep it in a cool, dark place. If you’re using it for cleansing, add sea salt or herbs like rosemary or rue. If it’s for power or protection, keep it as-is. Some people even charge it further under the moonlight, depending on the spell.

Hoodoo practitioners use storm water in floor washes to sweep out negativity and stagnant energy.

Brujas and curanderas might mix it with herbs to cleanse objects or sacred spaces.

In some Japanese Shinto traditions, rain from sacred places is considered purifying.

And some Celtic-inspired paths see storm water as the tears of the gods or goddesses—sacred, sorrowful, and powerful for emotional release and healing.

So yeah, rainy days are my favorite. Not just ‘cause they calm me down, but ‘cause they remind me how nature be out here doing spiritual work, loud and wild and unapologetic. That’s why storms got my heart—they speak in thunder and baptize in rain.

... Read moreSo, you've heard whispers of 'liquid lightning' or 'liquid thunder' and you're curious about its power? Let me tell you, it's not just a poetic term; it's a vibrant spiritual tool I've come to cherish, especially during those dramatic stormy scenes with lightning flashes. When people ask 'what is liquid lightning?', I explain it as storm water, particularly that collected during thunder and lightning storms, which is believed to be supercharged with immense natural energy. Think of it as nature's own energetic elixir! The original article touches on the spiritual significance across cultures, but let's dive deeper into how this 'liquid lightning' truly feels and why it's so potent. For me, collecting storm water isn't just about catching rain; it's a sacred act. As the lightning cracks across the sky and the thunder rumbles, I feel a tangible shift in the atmosphere. That raw, untamed energy isn't just in the air; it's absorbed by every drop of rain. This is why it's often called 'charged water' – it literally carries the electric vibration of the storm. Many traditions, including those I've explored, believe that water impacted by lightning holds unique properties. It’s seen as embodying the storm's power for rapid change, intense cleansing, and fierce protection. I've personally found it to be incredibly effective for breaking through stagnant energy or for situations where swift, decisive action is needed. It's like having a concentrated dose of the storm's transformative force at your fingertips. But how do you really use this 'liquid lightning' in your daily practice? Beyond the general uses mentioned, I find it invaluable for certain specific intentions. For instance, if I'm feeling overwhelmed or bogged down by negativity, a few drops of lightning-charged storm water in my bath or a mist around my aura can feel like an immediate energetic reset. It's almost as if the storm itself is washing away what no longer serves me. I also love using it for empowering intentions. If I'm manifesting something big or need an extra boost of courage, I'll anoint candles or crystals with a tiny bit of this charged water. It amplifies my intention with the storm's intense energy. For protection, I've even created small protective amulets by dipping herbs or tiny crystals in 'liquid thunder' and then letting them dry. The key is to approach it with reverence and clear intention. Remember to collect it safely in clean glass jars, directly from the sky during a downpour, avoiding water that has touched the ground. Labeling your jars with the date and type of storm (e.g., 'Lightning Storm Water - June 2023') helps you understand its unique energetic signature. Every storm is different, and so is the water it yields. This connection to the wild, unpredictable, and powerful aspects of nature is what makes 'liquid lightning' such a profound and practical component of my spiritual journey.
