🌿 Where Do I Start? Finding Your Spiritual Path When You Don’t Know Where You Come From

By The Hidden Porch

Let’s talk heart to heart for a second. A lotta folks feel the pull toward spirituality — that whisper in your spirit that tells you there’s more to this life than just work, bills, and the everyday.

But what if you don’t know your roots? What if you were adopted, or your family never spoke on where y’all came from? What if all you have is a yearning, but no map?

First off, you are not alone. So many people — especially in the diaspora — are trying to reconnect to something deeper, something older. And that alone is beautiful. But before we go calling down ancestors or dressing candles with rituals we found online, let’s take a breath.

🌬️✨ 1. You Can Still Begin

You don’t need all the answers to start. Spirituality is a journey, not a destination. Your soul knows things your mind ain’t caught up with yet. Just start where you are — with curiosity, with care, and with respect.

🧬🌍 2. Don’t Know Where You Come From?

Here’s How to Start Digging:

• Take a DNA test: Yes, this is a basic start. It can point you toward regions, tribes, or cultures — especially if you’re of African, Indigenous, or mixed descent.

• Talk to family elders: Even if they didn’t talk much before, you’d be surprised what they remember when you ask with real love.

• Look for cultural clues: Foods, phrases, religious practices, old photos — anything that gives you a breadcrumb trail.

• Ask Spirit to guide you: Light a white candle, sit in silence, and say, “Show me where I come from.” Watch what signs and people show up.

• Visit a spiritual historian or genealogist: These folks can help put pieces together you might not even realize are important.

⚠️💭 3. Don’t Play in Sacred Waters You Ain’t Meant For

This is love talk, not judgment. There are real spiritual systems that are closed — meaning, you must be born into that culture, lineage, or be initiated properly through that tradition. Just because a ritual looks powerful doesn’t mean it’s yours to use.

🔥 Some practices are inherited through blood, oaths, or ancestral ties. That’s not gatekeeping — that’s spiritual safety. Playing with spirits that aren’t yours is like breaking into someone else’s house. You wouldn’t want anyone doing that to you, right?

Ask before you act.

💬 Talk to elders, priests, or practitioners from those cultures. Ask, “Is this practice open or closed?”

🌐 Do your research. Read books, not just memes.

🙏 And if they say no — honor that. You’ll find what’s yours, and it’ll be even more powerful when you do.

🌱 4. Open Spiritual Practices Anyone Can Start With:

These are neutral practices that don’t belong to one culture, but they can still be sacred and deep:

• Meditation 🧘🏾‍♀️ – Get still. Listen to your own spirit.

• Working with the Elements 🌿🔥💧🌬 – Nature is our oldest teacher.

• Ancestor Veneration 🕯 – Anyone can honor their bloodline with water, photos, candles, or prayer.

• Journaling & Dreamwork 📓✨ – Your spirit speaks loudest in dreams and quiet moments.

• Energy Work & Protection (crystals, cleansing baths, Florida Water, eggs) – Yes, learn to clean and protect your space.

• Divination Tools (tarot, pendulums, bibliomancy) – Start slow, ask questions, and let Spirit answer.

• Moon & Sun Rituals 🌕☀️ – The sky watches over all of us. You can align with the moon phases to set intentions and release energy.

🛡️ 5. Stay Protected. Period.

Look, once you open the door to the spirit world, even just a little — you shine. You may not feel like it yet, but trust, the light is there. And light attracts all kinds of energy — good, bad, curious, and confused.

Keep yourself covered:

• Wear protective jewelry or carry spiritual charms (like obsidian, evil eye, hamsa, or a silver ring).

• Cleanse your body and your home regularly with smoke, sprays, or spiritual baths.

• Set boundaries before rituals. Call in only what is aligned with your highest good.

• Call on your ancestors to walk with you — even if you don’t know their names yet. They know you.

• Pray. Talk to Spirit like family. Ask for protection, every day.

🌍 6. If You’re of African Descent…

Then you’ve got magic in your blood — whether you know it or not. Our people come from lineages that were deeply spiritual before colonialism tried to strip us clean.

👑 Check out my book “Rooted in Spirit.”

It’s a perfect place to start — full of knowledge, topics, rituals, and real stories to help guide you into your power with love, grace, and safety. It’s written for us — by someone who’s walked this road and knows how deep the roots run. 🌿

💖 Final Word: You Are Worthy

You don’t need to prove your worth to Spirit. You don’t need the perfect tools, the fanciest altar, or a long list of ancestors you know by name. All you need is willingness, respect, and a heart that’s ready to remember.

✨ Your path is sacred. Your journey is valid. Just take one step — then the next will come.

With love,

... Read moreNavigating spirituality without the knowledge of your roots can feel daunting, but you are not alone. Many people experience this same yearning, particularly within diasporic communities seeking reconnection to their ancestral past. Start your spiritual journey with simplicity and openness; remember, it begins with curiosity. Taking a DNA test can offer insights into your heritage and potentially connect you to cultures previously unknown. Engaging with family elders may unveil rich histories and traditions that have been passed down through generations. Be receptive to the cultural elements that surround you, such as food and rituals, as these may contain clues about your origins. Spiritual practices are available to everyone, regardless of background. Focus on meditation, engaging with nature, and journaling. Ancestor veneration is a meaningful way to honor your lineages—simply lighting a candle or reciting prayers can be incredibly powerful. Exploring divinatory tools or connecting with the lunar cycles can further reinforce your connection to the spiritual realm. It’s essential to respect the spiritual systems that require initiation or lineage; play within the boundaries that ensure safety and honor to other cultures. If you’re of African descent, remember that a rich spiritual heritage is entwined in your blood, even if you haven’t fully accessed that knowledge yet. Check out literature that dives deep into these topics for guidance as you explore your path forward. Ultimately, the willingness to learn, respect, and authenticity is all that is necessary to embark on your sacred journey.
