Normalize washing your oily hair ✨

Training your hair is such a myth for the gals that are actually oily. If you’ve been trying to train your hair for months and feel like it’s not working, then babe you probably have oily roots and that’s OK! Wash your hair every 2-4 if that’s when you get oily because you know what’s worse? Letting the oils and dirt and sweat build up on your scalp and ruining your scalp environment.

If you’re feeling like your hair is getting dried out from over-washing but you also get oily quickly then you likely have build up on your scalp that needs to be cleansed in order to feel less oily! Or you’re using shampoo with harsh surfactants and you need an oil based shampoo

Comment below, how long do you go between wash days? 👇🏼

... Read moreIt's a common misconception that you can 'train' your oily hair to produce less oil by washing it less frequently. As someone who's battled with an oily scalp for years, I can tell you that for genuinely oily hair types, this often backfires! Your scalp's oil production is largely determined by genetics and hormones, not how often you wash it. In fact, trying to stretch washes too long can lead to a host of other issues that actually make your hair feel worse, not better. So, what's a realistic washing schedule for someone with an oily hair type? Based on my own experience and what I've learned, washing your hair every 2-4 days is perfectly normal and often necessary. The key is to listen to your scalp. If your oily roots are feeling greasy, itchy, or heavy, it's time for a wash. Neglecting this can lead to product and oil buildup, which can irritate your scalp, potentially cause dandruff, and even hinder healthy hair growth. Think of it like your skin – you wouldn't go days without washing your face if it's oily, right? Your scalp is skin too! If you find your hair looking oily shortly after washing, don't despair! This was a big frustration for me. Often, it's not because you're washing *too much*, but perhaps how you're washing or the products you're using. One common culprit is using shampoos with harsh sulfates that strip your scalp completely, leading to an overproduction of oil in response. Look for gentle, balancing shampoos, or as the original article mentioned, consider an oil-based shampoo designed to cleanse without stripping. Another reason could be insufficient rinsing, leaving product residue that makes your hair feel heavy and greasy quickly. Always make sure to rinse thoroughly until your hair feels 'squeaky clean' at the roots. For an effective oily hair care routine, I've found these tips incredibly helpful: Pre-Shampoo Scalp Care: If you experience significant buildup (which often contributes to that 'dry ends, oily roots' feeling), try a scalp scrub or a pre-shampoo treatment once a week. This helps to gently exfoliate and remove dead skin cells and product residue, allowing your scalp to breathe. Double Cleanse: Just like with your face, a double cleanse can be a game-changer for oily hair. The first wash breaks down oil and dirt, and the second truly cleanses the scalp. Use a small amount of shampoo for the first lather, rinse, then repeat with a slightly larger amount, focusing on a gentle massage to stimulate without over-scrubbing. Conditioner Placement: Always apply conditioner only to the mid-lengths and ends of your hair, avoiding the roots. Using conditioner near your scalp can weigh down your hair and contribute to oiliness. Cool Water Rinse: Finishing your wash with a cool water rinse can help seal the hair cuticles, adding shine and potentially reducing oil production slightly. Clean Your Tools: Regularly clean your hairbrushes and combs. They can accumulate oil, dead skin, and product residue, which you then transfer back to your clean hair. Hands Off: Try to avoid touching your hair throughout the day. Every time you touch your hair, you transfer oils from your fingertips to your strands, making them appear greasier faster. Ultimately, embracing your oily hair type means understanding its needs. It's about finding a routine that keeps your scalp clean and healthy, rather than fighting against its natural tendencies. Don't feel pressured by myths; prioritize scalp health and wash when your hair tells you it's ready!
