3 things I did for years that DAMAGED my hair

The first two will make or break your scalp health & scalp health is the key to thick, long, strong, healthy hair. The third was leading to so much breakage! Fine hair gets oily easily, so it’s tempting to want to skip anything moisturizing to avoid greasy hair, but that ends up leading to breakage…

... Read moreIt's so frustrating when you feel like you're doing everything right, but your hair just isn't thriving. For years, I struggled with dullness, breakage, and slow growth, constantly wondering what damages hair the most. I tried countless products, but nothing truly changed until I looked inward at my daily habits. It turns out, I was making some common hair problems much worse without even realizing it! Let me share the three biggest mistakes I was making that were causing immense damage to my hair, and more importantly, what I learned to do instead to finally achieve healthier, stronger strands. 1. Sleeping with Wet Hair: A Recipe for Breakage and Scalp Issues I used to be so guilty of this! After an evening shower, I’d often just tie my hair up or lay down with it still damp, thinking it would air dry overnight. Big mistake! Sleeping with wet hair creates a perfect breeding ground for fungal and bacterial infections on your scalp, which can lead to itchiness, flakes, and even hair loss. Beyond that, your hair is most fragile when it's wet. The friction against your pillowcase can cause significant cuticle damage, leading to frizz, split ends, and serious breakage. I noticed my pillow often had more strands than usual after a night of sleeping on wet hair. *What I do now:* I make sure my hair is at least 80-90% dry before bed. If I shower late, I'll gently blow-dry it on a cool setting, or use a microfiber towel to absorb excess moisture more effectively. Sometimes, I'll loosely braid it once it's mostly dry to prevent tangles and friction, and I always use a silk or satin pillowcase to minimize snagging and reduce damage. 2. Skipping Weekly Scalp Detox & Treatment: The Root of All Evil This was a huge eye-opener for me. My scalp felt constantly dirty or itchy, and my hair growth seemed stagnant. I completely overlooked the importance of scalp health, thinking shampooing was enough. But just like our skin, our scalp needs exfoliation and nourishment to function optimally. Product buildup, excess oils, dead skin cells, and environmental pollutants can clog follicles, hindering healthy hair growth and causing inflammation. *What I do now:* I've incorporated a gentle scalp scrub once a week to remove buildup and stimulate circulation. I also follow up with a nourishing scalp serum or a light treatment mask, especially if my scalp feels dry or irritated. Massaging my scalp regularly has become a ritual; it feels amazing and helps deliver nutrients to the hair follicles. Prioritizing my scalp health has truly transformed my hair from the roots up. 3. Not Properly Hydrating My Fine Hair Type: Fearing Greasiness, Causing Breakage As someone with fine hair, I was always terrified of making it greasy or weighing it down. So, I often skipped conditioners or opted for very minimal hydration, thinking it would keep my hair light and voluminous. This fear of greasiness directly led to my hair being chronically dehydrated, making it prone to breakage, static, and dullness. Fine hair still needs moisture to maintain its elasticity and prevent damage, just in a more targeted way. *What I do now:* I learned to embrace lightweight hydrating products. I use a good quality, lightweight conditioner every wash, focusing on the mid-lengths and ends. Once a week, I apply a hydrating hair mask specifically formulated for fine hair, ensuring it doesn't contain heavy oils or silicones that can weigh my hair down. Sometimes, I'll even use a tiny drop of a very light oil (like argan or jojoba) on my ends as a sealant. This targeted approach ensures my fine strands get the moisture they need without sacrificing volume, significantly reducing breakage and making my hair feel so much softer and stronger. If you have fine hair, don't shy away from hydration; just choose your products wisely!

A person's back shows long, light-colored damaged hair, with an inset close-up revealing severe thinning and breakage on the scalp. The image highlights the impact of 6 years of bleaching, hair extension damage, and diabetic hair thinning and loss.
This image explains how avoiding heat helps hair recovery. High temperatures alter hair's protein structure, convert α-keratin to β-keratin, weaken hair, open cuticles, and strip natural moisture and oils, leading to dryness and damage.
The image illustrates the benefits of using a shower filter for hair health. It removes contaminants like chlorine, lead, and heavy metals that can damage hair, making it rough and dry, and supports a healthy scalp for growth and shine.
How I saved my damaged hair
I absolutely destroyed my hair. I used to bleach my hair every 8 weeks for about 6 years and being a type 1 diabetic (I was newly diagnosed and had uncontrolled blood sugar in the beginning) led to my hair having constant breakage, thinning, never growing, and feeling like straw. I thought the cau
