Stepping into the world of multimedia journalism has been an incredible whirlwind, especially during my first year. For instance, covering events like the food distribution for students or the initiative to properly dispose of unwanted medications requires meticulous planning – who to interview, what B-roll to capture, and what key facts to highlight. I always have my trusty NEWS REPORTER'S NOTEBOOK handy, jotting down every quote and detail. The field reporting is where the adrenaline really kicks in. You're not just a reporter; you're your own camera operator, sound engineer, and sometimes, even lighting technician! Learning to frame a shot while simultaneously conducting an interview, often in less-than-ideal conditions, is a skill that takes practice. And yes, caffeine is a MUST to keep up with the pace – my Sabrina's brown sugar shaken espresso often gets me through those long stretches on the road. Once the shooting is done, the real magic (and sometimes headache!) begins: post-production. Back at the station, it's time to record the voice overs! This is where your script comes to life, adding narration to complement the visuals. Then, it's Editing the story! – piecing together all the footage, interviews, and voiceovers into a coherent, compelling narrative. This creative process is one of my favorite parts, seeing all the elements come together to tell an important story. It's not always glamorous; sometimes you're battling software glitches or tight deadlines, but the satisfaction of hitting 'export' is unmatched. Beyond the technical skills, I've found that adaptability and a strong sense of curiosity are paramount. News doesn't wait, and you have to be ready to pivot at a moment's notice. One day you're covering a community event, the next you're on a breaking news scene. It's challenging, yes, but also incredibly rewarding to be the one bringing vital information to your community.
