Black Torch 🖤 Supernatural Action Manga
Title: Black Torch (Vol.1)
Creator: Tsuyoshi Takaki
📄 Plot: Jiro Azuma, a modern-day ninja with the ability to communicate with animals, becomes entangled in a supernatural war after encountering a powerful black cat named Rago and saving his life. Rago returns the favor later when a powerful Mononoke tries to capture him, mortally wounding Jiro in the process. After the battle, Jiro is forced to join the Bureau of Espionage because he's merged with a demon, and frankly, they dont know what to do with him.
📖 Genre: Supernatural / Action (Shonen)
💭 My Thoughts: If Denji's obsession with Makima made you uncomfy, you might like this series more. They have similar (NOT identical) plots, wherein a boy meets a supernatural animal being, they merge to avoid the boy dying, and end up forcibly working for a government agency that would otherwise eliminate them. I really like the banter-y dynamic between Jiro and Rago and the fight scenes SLAP, I can't wait to see them animated (it's supposedly getting an anime🤞)
*side note* There are currently only 5 volumes of this manga, and it is unclear if it'll ever continue.
⭐ Star Rating: 8/10

When I first picked up Black Torch manga, Volume 1, I wasn't entirely sure what to expect, but wow, it delivered! Beyond the initial plot summary, what truly sets this series apart for me is the dynamic between Jiro Azuma and the powerful Mononoke, Rago. It's not just a simple partnership; it's a forced cohabitation born out of necessity, creating a really unique banter and tension that keeps you glued to the pages. From the very first few *Black Torch manga panels*, you see Jiro, this seemingly ordinary ninja with a peculiar ability to talk to animals, stumbling into a world way bigger than himself. His initial interaction with Rago, a sarcastic black cat, is gold. Then, when a powerful Mononoke hunter tries to capture Rago, leading to Jiro's near-death experience and subsequent merger, the stakes immediately skyrocket. The artwork in these action sequences, where Jiro combines with Rago in his monstrous form, is absolutely breathtaking – you can practically feel the impact as debris flies and ancient powers clash, just like those intense images of Rago battling a cloaked figure, his monstrous form unleashed. Speaking of the Mononoke and the governmental involvement, the concept of the 'Anti-Mononoke Special Operations Espionage Unit' code-named 'Black Torch' adds a fantastic layer of intrigue. It's not just about fighting demons; it's about navigating a bureaucratic system that views Jiro and Rago as both assets and threats. I especially enjoyed seeing characters like Assistant Chief Usami, who adds to the world-building of this unique organization. The mystery surrounding the 'Black Star of Doom' and Rago's true nature makes you want to devour every single chapter. It's a crying shame that the Black Torch manga currently only has five volumes. Every time I flip through the Black Torch manga cover of each volume, I just wish there were more stories to delve into. It leaves you wanting so much more, especially with the rich potential of Tsuyoshi Takaki's storytelling and character development. The fights are so fluid and impactful, making me genuinely excited about the possibility of a *Black Torch anime adaptation*. Imagining those Black Torch manga panels animated, with Jiro's acrobatic ninja skills and Rago's raw power, would be incredible. If you're looking for a supernatural action shonen that feels fresh and has a great blend of humor and intensity, definitely give Black Torch a read. Even with its short run, it’s an unforgettable journey with Jiro and Rago.
