Heavy but hopeful. 💛

Praised by Jane Goodall herself, visiting @Chimp Haven has been on the top of my list for years. Getting to see the incredible care that goes into making these animals’ lives the best they can be was incredibly inspiring.

Most of the chimpanzees at Chimp Haven spent decades in biomedical research facilities in the United States.

Starting in the 50s and 60s, chimpanzees in the U.S. were used in the NASA space program, and in the 70s and beyond hundreds were used in infectious disease research. It wasn’t until 2000 when the Chimp Act was passed establishing a sanctuary system for retired research chimpanzees.

For nearly 300 chimpanzees Chimp Haven offers 200 acres of forested space, healthy meals, medical care, daily enrichment and freedom for how they choose to spend their retirement.

... Read moreVisiting Chimp Haven offers a deeply moving experience that combines a sense of heaviness for what these chimpanzees endured with hope for their future. As someone who has always admired wildlife conservation, stepping onto the 200-acre forested grounds felt like entering a safe haven for these remarkable animals. One of the most striking aspects of Chimp Haven is how the caretakers tailor daily enrichment activities to encourage natural behaviors and social interactions among the chimpanzees. This individualized attention shows the sanctuary’s commitment not only to their physical health but to their emotional wellbeing too. Learning about the history of these chimpanzees was eye-opening. Many were part of NASA’s early space and biomedical experiments, which highlights a complex ethical past. The Chimp Act of 2000 was a pivotal moment in shifting toward retirement and rehabilitation, and Chimp Haven embodies what true sanctuary means. For visitors, the sanctuary offers more than just observation—it’s an educational journey. Private tours, although limited, provide intimate insights into chimpanzee care, while public events like Discovery Day foster community engagement and raise awareness about animal welfare. Supporting Chimp Haven can be deeply rewarding. Donations go directly towards providing medical care, nutritious meals, and habitat maintenance. Watching the documentary “Meet The Chimps” on National Geographic via Disney+ also offers a compelling look at their lives and the sanctuary’s impact. Overall, visiting the world’s largest chimpanzee sanctuary feels like participating in a vital mission to honor and protect animals that have contributed so much to science yet deserve peaceful retirement. It’s an experience I highly recommend to anyone passionate about animal conservation and unique travel experiences.
